Do you think recruits and their parents are looking at spreadsheets? Point is a good coach like Wilcox will win at Cal, and he did very well in his first year there, and is recruiting well.
Dykes is a weak hire. Which I am fine with, makes the Tigers path easier. All these analysts praising every hiring - except Herm at Arizona State - when half will be fired in 3-4 years.
No, I think they pay attention to facilities, the assistant coaches they play for, and a hundred other little things that show up that are directly controlled by budget, and if you've got a $20 million bill you can't pay for it's going to affect your program.
And congrats to Wilcox - he took a 5-7 team and took them to.....5-7!! Wow. Well done. He's the next Lombardi.
Cal's problem wasn't Dykes. It's Cal. Call it for what it is.
Dude, why do you care so much what I think about your new coach? Congrats if you like him. I'm underwhelmed. And Cal's facilities are great, which is why Cal has a high debt service.
10-26 conference record kind of hard to defend. 1-11 vs. Cal's traditional rivals. 3 of those years had Jared Goff, the #1 pick in '16 NFL draft, as his QB.
I actually have family that goes to Cal. The problem for Dykes was similar to what Yankees have here: the feeling that the coach doesn't want to be there. Dykes wife did NOT like Cal and Dykes was purportedly looking for jobs back nearer home quite often. He didn't get along very well with the AD and they finally decided to simply 'call it quits': both sides really had a tenuous relationship with each other. Dykes' bloodlines in Texas are extremely well known (obviously having your father be the winningest coach in Texas Tech history helps you with recruiting).
Having been to Strawberry Canyon at least 10 times, I can tell you the facilities are nice....by G5 standards, but are not nearly as nice as Oregon's and other SEC facilities.
Dykes is not a horrible hire by any stretch. He'll most likely be a solid recruiter and a good in-game coach. For this time of year, this kind of hire is actually fairly good.
