How many teams can you point to that have sell-out to almost sell-out crowds with bad teams? Not very many. If a product goes bad, the fans find something else to do with their money. Even teams like the Yankees lose a lot of ticket sells when the Yankees aren't doing well.

NC State 4-14 ACC last year, Indiana 7-11 in the B1G, both top 10 in attendance. Nebraska 6-12 B1G, Tennessee 8-10 SEC, both top 20 in the country. It's not unusual at all for fans to support their teams when they're having bad years.

Riiiiight. Blame the HS coaches. Or the AAU coaches. Or the summer league coaches. Blame players, fans, media.

Meanwhile, you’ll remain oblivious to the obvious.

You don’t think the HS coaches saw how MEMPHIS essentially embarrassed Keelon -a former Memphis HS coach himself - so Tubby could hire his own son? So why would they support this program?

I HOPE Tubby turns it around. I really do. And the folks on here that know me know I’m speaking from the heart. I was here during the Little Tubby & Big Cat days, Doom Haynes, Penny, Little General, Baskerville Holmes... I was in the building when they announced John Gunn had passed.

I was in the building at the first game at the Pyramid, the first game at FedEx forum.

We are close to Tic Price days right now. The good news is when we made a move, we got the right coach. That let’s me know that with the right coach again, we’ll be back to glory days, not struggling to beat Nobody State.

So I’ll hang in there and support my team, and laugh while some of you blame GP, Verno, Easterwood, Geoff, the CA, or whomever. And smh at the idiocy of it all...

According to the Harris camp it is because Tubby ignored him most of his recruitment. Even after they "started" recruiting him, Tubby rarely calls or visits.

So who do you want to blame? The Tub for being the laziest college coach of all time, or the fans?

Great point...East is playing in a tourney this weekend against teams from outside the area. Tubby and Pooh went to the game.
AND LEFT WITH FOUR MINUTES TO GO.
Damn, you couldn’t stay to the end? Why not have the ENTIRE STAFF DRESSED IN BLUE FRONT AND CENTER, AND LET EVERYONE KNOW THIS IS A TIGER TOWN.

Nope, gotta beat the traffic, let’s go.

I agree. The fanbase now has a culture. If it is unhappy about something or someone, they protest by not supporting the team. Did it to Finch, JP and now with Tubby. A fan is free to do as they please, but not going to games is a bad look, IMO.

It's not the fanbase. That's just the world. People don't spend their free time to go watch unenjoyable crap. They don't go to crappy movies, crappy plays, or crappy sports events.

I know the basketball hasn't been pretty at times and the attendance is really bad, but you'd think Memphis was 2-6 (not 6-2) from looking at my mentions.

I'm surprised so many are so ready to bury this team before it even loses a bunch of games....

So because we’re 6-2 squeaking out wins over Mercer, Northern Kentucky, etc...We should be happy about Tiger Basketball.....Also followed it up with a quote from Cordova Highs Basketball Coach who said “Our fans are fairweather and no wonder players don’t wanna play there”
It does seem odd. My high school had a worse record and we continued to fill the gym every home game.

Personally, I think it was an embarrassment to have hired Keelon in the first place simply to get his sons. I don't mean anything about him specifically, I mean the "package deal" thing.

I bet your rec team would play with a lot of heart. Even if you have a team of “Rudy’s” I doubt you get anywhere with inferior talent on the team.

P5 won’t touch Memphis because TV networks aren’t demanding P5 conferences to touch Memphis.

You want Memphis to sell-out a 60,000 seat stadium, but you think you’ll convert tens of thousands of alumni to be regular game attendees when there wasn’t an overwhelming culture of getting students to the football games for generations. You want to get regular sellouts when the games don’t involve UTK? Then you win for twenty straight years and make the resident students want to be at football games. Because if Memphis can’t contend for national championships (look at UCF) no matter how well the team does, it’s going to be hard to convince the non-affiliated locals to go to the games. It’s like expecting an NIT season in basketball to be viewed as successful.

Cal didn’t kiss arse. But he got top talent.

Tubby doesn’t have a Worldwide Wes. Tubby doesn’t have a pipeline. If Tubby can’t bring in players from outside of Memphis, he needs a way to make Memphis players want to sign at Memphis. If he isn’t preparing players to play professionally; and he isn’t winning championships on any level, then why are good Memphis players going to want to play at Memphis even if they grew up wanting to play at Memphis?

If Tubby wants to get top talent, maybe he needs to kiss arse.

The way I see it, Tubby just wanted one last sweet contract to ride off into the sunset. And the conference for Memphis was a lot easier than the conference for Texas Tech. And he’s closer to home in Memphis. But I don’t think Tubby gives an ef.

Memphis got played.

Tubby will not do what it takes within the rules and law to win. It would mean extraordinary hard work, eating his pride, dealing with nettlesome parents and prima donna recruits, , firing his son and perhaps loyal staff, accommodating the media, wholehearted program promotion, etc.

Tubby is a rich, elderly man with a long term contract destined for the HOF and who is well respected by his peers (they do not fear him) and the national media (he does things “the right way”). He can afford to do things his way and that is exactly what he does regardless of the damage he inflicts on our program.

Yet another case of negative fans jumping all over the coaching staff when there is a perfectly good explanation. Tubby didn't leave to beat traffic, he left because Matlock was starting in 15 minutes and he forgot to set the VCR.

They're not bad. This team has more heart than any of Josh's teams.

We opened as a pick 'em against Albany...Albany. No, Josh's teams were NEVER this. Last I checked we were 158 in Ken Pom.

Here's our next 13 games-

Albany
Louisville
Siena
Loyola
LSU
@ Cincy
@ UCF
Tulsa
Tulane
@ Temple
UCONN
@ Tulsa
Cincy

We'll be favored in MAYBE 4 games...Albany we are now 1 point favorites, Siena will be a close line, Loyola, and possibly Tulane at home.

UAB blew us out...yes, the same team that lost to Richmond, Iowa, and Buffalo. And this team isn't bad? They play with heart because they squeak out games against sub 200 teams?

I agree with all of that, but not sure I can say Memphis got played. Anyone with a brain new how bad of a hire this was. This is all on Bowen and/or Rudd. What the hell were they thinking?

I was in the building at the first game at the Pyramid, the first game at FedEx forum.

We are close to Tic Price days right now. The good news is when we made a move, we got the right coach. That let’s me know that with the right coach again, we’ll be back to glory days, not struggling to beat Nobody State.

So I’ll hang in there and support my team, and laugh while some of you blame GP, Verno, Easterwood, Geoff, the CA, or whomever. And smh at the idiocy of it all...

Spot on. There are a select few that deserve the blame (Rudd, Bowen, and, most of all, Tubby). It's certainly not the fans or media.

There's an easy way to appease the fans and shut up the naysayers. Tubby has shown no interest in putting the work in, though.
