Love Delaware, hate Delaware, does not matter, he was a great coach.

In 1994, my then 12 yo son (JMU '04) and I went up to Delaware for our game. It was a last minute decision made about 8 in the morning and when I called the ticket office to ask about tickets, I was told that 2 tickets were available and would be held for us. It turned out that they were right in the middle of the Blue Hen Boosters on the 50 yard line. The folks around me asked: How did you get these tickets? very upset that 2 purple folks were in their midst. YOUR ticket office I answered.

Anyway it was a rare day as JMU won 30-10 and completely dominated the game. The MRDs played at half time, it was great! Those Blue Hen fans were shouting: TUBBY you STINK! We should have fired him years ago! THE WORSE! GET HIM OUT!

Of course he stayed, won 300 games and got the place named after him.

(PS this is the game that my son was introduced to the piss wall, another great step toward adulthood.)

RIP to a legend. As I understand it, the UD coach before Raymond back in th 1950-60s invented the Wing T, but Raymond was the one who perfected it and who's name is associated with it..

I remember going to Courtland HS (Spotsylvania Co) football games as a kid and watching Courtland win 4 state titles 1981-1987 (3 in AA, and one in AAA/Div 5) running the Delaware Wing T. I think the 1st 3 of those AA titles were back when there was only A/AA/AAA, no divisions, only 4 rounds. So you had to go at least 8-2 to get in..After Courtland's 87' title a new HS was opened in the county & the talent was diluted. Courtland made another title game a couple years later & then I think the coach retired.

I think a alot of other HS programs ran the Delaware Wing T back in the 1980s-1990s. I don't follow HS ball much anymore, but I guess not many HS run the Wing T now in the era of the spread offense..

I attended all of those Courtland playoff games back in the day. Ken Brown HC and Tim Coleman were the Wing T gurus. Between the two, they won about 8 State Championships running it. Courtland still runs it today. Tim won a few State Championships with it at Spotsylvania H.S. and Fredericksburg Christian. King George ran it for several years, also.

Tim Coleman is a legend.
