I agree, Cleveland. It seems that too many transfers and JUCO recruits have not panned out. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I prefer recruits form high school, with a key transfer or JUCO thrown in from time to time to fill a dire need. Actually, hasn't that been what Senderoff has mostly been doing?

Hey ... Kent is less than one year removed from Jimmy Hall (transfer) and Deon Edwin (Juco) ... and a NCAA bid ... so should not say too many have not panned out ... more accurately is ... the current crop has not panned out (although still time for a couple to step up ... remember, it took Edwin almost an entire season to get there).

Look around ... that's the college basketball world right now, particularly for mid-majors.

Cleveland, that IS the basketball world, and it will keep getting worse, or better, depending upon your point of view. I don't have a number and I'm not going to come up with a list, but I can think of plenty of transfers and JUCOs that worked out (Antonio Gates was the best), and plenty that were busts. I imagine KSU's success rate is within the normal range, over the long haul. So, I retract my last comment since I have no evidence that "too many" have not panned out.

Jaylin Walker to get healthy and stay healthy and have those nights where he just isn't going to let the team lose.

Jalen Avery takes care of the basketball and shows signs that he is on the verge of breaking out as a point guard in this league. I don't know that he will ever take games over, but I do think he still has potential left to tap. Could be a difference maker, especially on the nights when Walker is hot.

Pippen & Peterson make big time progress. Easy to forget that they are just sophomores but I think both can have their nights.

Otherwise, with the exception of BJ Dulling, I think you have a roster full of guys who have either reached their potential or just don't quite have it.

I wouldn't write off Frederick as a finished product yet. Even some of the best JUCOs we've had have taken some time to get up to D1 speed. Omni Smith's first year is a great example of that. Frederick is also relatively young in terms of basketball. He was a late bloomer in HS that was not on any D1 team's radar until around this time last year. I've thought he's looked pretty good in the pick and roll at times which could make him a weapon paired with Avery.

If De La Rosa figures out how to stay out of foul trouble he would become a much better player as well. Not sure that will happen, but if it does that's the biggest key to elevating this team.

One other comment regarding De La Rosa's foul issues. He's at 7.0 fouls per 40 minutes. Pippen is at 6.9 and Frederick is at 6.2. Obviously a large part of this is on our post players needing to be smarter and move their feet better, but playing better perimeter defense is also key. If we can allow less penetration we could save some fouls on the bigs rotating to help. If we can improve the perimeter d and cut down on the post fouls I think this team becomes significantly better.

Cleveland, your five are good. I may put Al Fisher in there, as Axeme stated, and also Eric Haut, but I'm not sure who I'd knock off. As for the five biggest disappointments, fortunately I tend to forget those names. Anyone remember Steve Hardwick? Good walk-ons have been Charles Glenn, Ryan Lehrke, Ray Scezpaniak and it looks like possibly Bernstein of this year's team.

And don't forget Jay Peters, who was both a high school recruit, then a transfer to KSU. Antonio Gates, Omni Smith, Jimmy Hall, Demetric Shaw, Kevin Warzynski, Al Fisher, Eric Haut, Ric Blevins and jay Peters. That would be one whale of a roster.

Kevin Warzynski ahead of Quaintance??? Q is probably the best defensive post player Kent State has ever had. He brought an "it" factor that neither Warzynski or Omni Smith quite had.

Put Q and Jimmy Hall in the paint together, with Al Fisher and Demetric Shaw in the backcourt and play Gates as a "small" forward. Dang. That starting five would be hard to beat. Let Warzynski come off the bench with Youngblood and Omni Smith.

Ridenour was a walk-on last year. Earned a scholarship this year.
