"Of CBS, ESPN, ABC, FOX, FS1 and NBC, only FOX and FS1 — fresh off a new deal with the Big Ten — saw ratings boosts this season."

As mentioned earlier, FOX saw ratings increase, so while there were declines everywhere else, it does appear that total viewership remained steady.

Increases for FOX and FS1 were due to the new B1G contract, which of course negatively impacted ESPN's numbers.

Overall CFB ratings were down though. But this is basically true for all sorts of ad driven TV programming. It is why Murdoch is divesting himself of a lot of that to Disney, while still holding on to FOX, FOX News, and FS1/2. The future appears to be subscription based streaming and FANG domination.

Cheers,
Neil

Doing some quick math suggests to me that the gains at FOX and FS1 exceed the losses at CBS, ABC, ESPN and NBC combined.

Big FOX added 14 games, increasing from 19 telecasts to 33. The combined increase based on incremental viewers for 19 games and all viewers for 14 games is around 63.5 million viewers. FS1 increased its telecasts from 33 to 38. Again, combining increased average for 33 games with 5 new games, gets an increase in total viewership of 6.5 million viewers, making the combined increase for FOX and FS1 70 million viewers

I calculate that ABC lost 39.3 million viewers, ESPN lost 15.5 million (based on reduced average for 75 games and lost viewers from having 2 fewer games), CBS lost 8.6 million and NBC lost 0.4-0.5 million. That's a total of 63.9 million viewers, far viewer than FOX and FS1 gained, although losses probably extend to ESPN2 and ESPNU as well.

This is not a ratings decline for college football and a poor comparison to the NFL's decline. If anything, total viewership among this group of networks went up, with overall viewership likely stable. It's annoying that the reporters here weren't willing to do any actual arithmetic, but chose instead to jump to an incorrect conclusion based on a cursory analysis.

The problem is not every fan is a fan of the P5 schools. That is why ESPN is losing fanbase when they give away G5 games to other networks.

CBS and NBC would benefit more to start covering more college football. Let them start bidding for content rights with the AAC, MWC and SBC and maybe the CAA and MVFC as hot conferences to get better tv deals to broadcast games on Saturday. CAA/MVFC>C-USA as hot commodities.

And those ratings do not include viewers on WatchESPN, Fox Sports2Go, Stadium (with distribution via Facebook, Twitter, online and App).

I know there are quite a few A-State fans who used to watch whatever was on during a road game and listen to the radio, now most are using Roku or Apple TV or Chromecast to watch A-State on their home TV. Start chipping a thousand here and thousand there from schools with fan bases watching online and it might not help the ratings totals but I suspect people watch more college football than ever before.

Or how many people watch live games of The Big Sky schools on Pluto TV as well? All the schools do have their own separate channels to promote their school sports. That includes UC-Davis and Cal-Poly is getting extra cash for all their sports through the Big Sky on the PlutoTV.
