Do we have a complete coaching staff for football?
Don't believe so, but Stanford offensive asst Joe Ashfield appears to be the offensive line coach. So, I assume we're still missing a QBs coach, WRs coach, RBs coach, TEs coach, DL coach, LBs coach, and CB/S coach (unless Mack or Smith will be filling one of those positions), with one of those guys acting as a ST coordinator.

RE: Bloomgren's coaching staff
Do we need boots on the ground for recruiting?
Or do we think Blomgren will just try to focus on the decommits and guys that didn't get offers from Stanford and not do any real primary research?

These are the official coaching roles so far, according to riceowls.com:
Mike Bloomgren - Head Coach
Jerry Mack - Offensive Coordinator
Brian Smith - Defensive Coordinator
AJ Steward - Running Backs
Scott Vestal - Safeties
Can pencil in Ashfield at OL. And remember that there are now 10 assistant coaching slots available, giving a little more flexibility. Coordinators will usually have a position group they are responsible for, too.
It also lists 4 quality control, 2 offensive and 2 defensive GAs, 1 assistant recruiting coordinator, and 2 on video. That seems equivalent to last year, if the media guide was right. So it doesn't look like any new positions have been filled in those areas yet.

We are back in the quiet recruiting period so boots on the ground not quite as important.

Under the new NCAA rules, starting on January 9th, each football program is allowed 1 head coach and 10 assistant coaches. After Coach Bloomgren we seem to have:
(1) Jerry Mack - Offensive Coordinator
(2) Brian Smith - Defensive Coordinator
(3) Joe Ashfield - Offensive Line
(4) Mike Kershaw - something on offense
(5) AJ Steward - Running Backs (does anyone know if this is permanent, or if he was just kept on longer than other Bailiff assistants?)
(6) Scott Vestal - Safeties (does anyone know if this is permanent, or if he was just kept on longer than other Bailiff assistants?)
(7) ???
(8) ???
(9) ???
(10) ???
Or if you look by position, realizing some coaches will have multiple responsibilities:
HC: Mike Bloomgren
Assistant HC:
Recruiting Coordinator:
Special Teams Coordinator:
Offense:
OC: Jerry Mack
OL: Joe Ashfield
QB: Mike Kershaw?
RB: AJ Steward
WR:
TE:
Defense:
DC: Brian Smith
CB:
Saf: Scott Vestal
LB:
DL:

RE: Bloomgren's coaching staff
Not sure if these mean anything, but Garrett Wolfe, a recruiting assistant at Stanford, started following Coach Mack. Edward Jones II, the Assistant Director of Player Personnel at UH, started following Coach Smith and Coach Kershaw and Coach Smith is also following him.

Kind of strange to me that we still don't have a full staff at this point

RE: Bloomgren's coaching staff
Well our current roster only lists 78 players, and several of those are walk-ons I'm pretty sure. Considering we've only signed 6 players so far for next year and we've been starting the past few seasons with rosters about 100-110 players deep, maybe the strategy is we won't need as many coaches with a smaller roster?
I agree it's very odd. It would be nice to see some news - anything - from the football front.

In the podcast he mentions they had more interviews tomorrow. S&C has accepted and will be announced soon.

RE: Bloomgren's coaching staff
A lot of assistant coaching changes occur during and in the immediate aftermath of the coaching convention, which was held this week. This is not exactly abnormal for new staff. I remember Bailiff going to the convention in need of replacements (though it didn't always seem that was where he closed the deal). It's just more noticeable because there were more openings.
I'm curious about how other new staff stack up in getting their positions filled. (But not curious enough to look it up myself.)

Arkansas' staff is complete as of today. Chad Morris was hired the day after Bloomgren.

Well let’s see...Chad Morris experienced HC at an SEC school. Probably has a plethora of applicants. Bloomgren is a first time head coach at a program in a weak conference that went 9-27 over the last three seasons. Probably a little tougher to get good applicants. Be patient Bloomgren will have his staff soon enough and the success of the Owls will be on the rise.

Maybe. Staying on the low-end of G5. South Alabama has all 10 assistant coaches. Georgia Southern appears to have 12 (Not sure why, but 4 of them have no portfolio. So something's off there.) Louisiana has 8. UTEP has 8 (including one I haven't seen before - inside wide receivers, in addition to a wide receivers coach).
Seems like Rice is a little behind (4 assistants).

You have information on what Bloomgren's assistants will be paid? Can you share?

There is always a hungry coach who wants to "move" up in the coaching world. Always a coach who thinks he can turn things around.
Plenty young guys out there. And seems most of young guys who leave Rice go to better programs.

According to the podcast, I believe JK said we are usually in or around the top 3 for C-USA, which would put our assistants' pool around $1.2 mil according to the latest USA Today database. That puts us firmly in the middle of the G5 that were reported on in the USA Today database.
While I would hope we could bump up towards the top 25%, this is not a bad position to start in for Bloomgren.

He’s also mentioned in response to questions about recruiting budget that he considered his assistant salary pool to be the most important and he made sure the university was committed to funding it how he wanted.
