Expectation for Mike
Everybody is so happy, and I believe made a right HIRE, a great HIRE. But we need keep our expectation realistic.

My expectation:
2018: 6-6 and win the bowl
2018: 8-4 and go to a bowl
2019: 9-3 , if not Conference champ, at least in the chap game, and competitive.

My Minimal expectation
2018: 5-7
2018: 6-6 or better, win the bowl
2019: 8-4 or better,

RE: Expectation for Mike
This conference is so bad, I'd be a bit disappointed in anything less than 7-5 next year. Yes, as I've often said before, the head coach DOES make that big a difference.

13 games next year since we play at Hawaii. I’m saying 10-4 and win the conference.

RE: Expectation for Mike
We have 13 games next year, courtesy of the trip to Hawaii.

Out of conference: Prairie View, Houston, at Hawaii, at Wake Forest, and at LSU.

In conference: Old Dominion, UAB, UTEP, and UTSA at home, and North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, and Florida International on the road.

The conference is so bad that I think eight or possibly nine wins are possible. Yes the head coach does make a difference. And he will probably up the quality of our recruits.

Here's a guess:

Wins: PV, Hawaii, ODU, UTEP, UTSA, and 2-3 of UAB, La Tech, and Southern Miss.
Losses: Houston, Wake, LSU, FIU, UNT.

7-6 or 8-5.

This was my thinking as well. Really hoping for 8+. Set the bar high.

Herman is good, but he only make 6-6 in Texas this year. How do you guys think.

I will be happy if he made the champ of CUSA in first 3 years.

Biggest win in 25 years for the program next year with an upset at LSU. Then a trap game loss. 13-1 with a conference championship and bowl win. #23 to end the year.

Herman isn't that good... I'm unimpressed with him.

Based off Stanford's offensive numbers this year in not expecting great offensive numbers.

The HC is important....OC AND DC are more important. Asst coaches are vital. Until we know the staff you can't made a legit prediction.

RE: Expectation for Mike
We lost our two best defensive players. I expect a turnaround, but asking for him to duplicate what TG did in 2006 after a 1-11 season is a lot (Cephus + Smalls in the Dillard + Clement breakout roles would help). But, the schedule is probably easier than in 06. I tend to agree with junrice's post. Making a bowl game would be a great sign, a step in the right direction that should be celebrated if it happens, but a losing record wouldn't be surprising. A 9-3 or better season contending for the CUSA title right away wouldn't be that nuts in this conference, considering what Kiffen did at FAU, but at that point we'd already be fighting to keep him here. I'd take it! Gonna say 5-7, 7-5, 9-3 for first 3 seasons. I'd put the over/under for his time at Rice at 3.5 seasons.

The Big 12 may be down, but it's a far cry from CUSA, where half the teams rank in the bottom quintile of the FBS division.

I think you're nuts if you actually believe that. The HC not only spearheads recruiting, but he sets the tone and culture in the lockerroom...he imposes the level of discipline on the team...he establishes the intensity of practices....and he has final say in game planning, not to mention setting the offensive and defensive philosophy.

RE: Expectation for Mike
I think some of above expectations are probably not reasonable in a coach's first year. My hope would be that the culture of the football team would be altered such that we are better prepared and have more disciplined play. Also, outside of the LSU game, I don't see any games in which we should be blown out

obviously you have neither played nor coached football in college or the pros...i have... the head couch DOES NOT set the tone...asst coaches set the tone.... the oc and the dc set the game plan... yeah the hc signs off on it but the GREAT head couch(if they don't call plays) gives that to their oc/dc...AGAIN WRONG HC DOESN'T spearhead recruiting. I didn't even talk to Hatfield until my recruiting visit. Asst coaches are the spearhead. Hell I didn't even talk to Hatfield much while I was at rice. My interaction was with my dc and pos coach. HC are the face...asst the backbone and your oc/dc are the heart... players are everything else.....
