RE: Game Day: Oakland
I really do appreciate the opportunity to build on the rivalry here with Oakland.

An exciting game tonight leads into another one in 16 days in their arena. Players AND fans have a chance to get very familair with the other team while both teams get in front of their home crowd during the series.

Great game to be at. JT was a monster all night, played smart in foul trouble. PJ was taking whatever he wanted driving in the paint. Excited to see them adjust at halftime and take the lead and finish the ballgame.

I liked how many students and athletes were there, but we need to get them cheering and loud. Butts in seats are great, but we need volume, especially from that group of fans.

I was surprised that Kampe blamed his players. I dislike Oakland and Kampe although I respect he's stayed and coached there all of these years.

Woah!! That behind the head pass by Ellison was something!! Paul Jackson is playing great as a PG, but EMU has a fine one waiting in the wings in Ellison.

Picking up Jackson, Minnie, etc. is a major coup for a mid-major.

Our transfers look much, much better than our regular recruits.

We have a starting four (JT4, Minnie, Bond and Jackson) as good as any in the MAC. The rest really need to come through.

I was going to say you missed Minnie in the earlier thread when you said it was a 3 man team. ie, the team's leading scorer. :-)

RE: Game Day: Oakland
Looking at the game stats:
*3 players with 24 points in Thompson, Minnie, and Jackson!!
*Bond with 12 points, Nobles with 6, and Groce with 5. No one else with points. (Though Ellison did have 3 assists)
*Mot only did Nobles start (congrats to him, btw), but he also played 35 minutes?!?!
*Nice attendance for a weekday game at 1,666. Unfortunately that is what we consider a good crowd.

I didn't want to jinx Paul Jackson, but he's the best PG at EMU since Boykins. Thompson is the best bigman at EMU since Long. Minnie is a great player too. I have to give credit to Murphy for bringing in very nice talent. I was happy to see Ellison get some meaningful minutes. We need to keep developing our bench. We also ran a motion offense and got the ball to JT4. Again, nice job Murphy. Ifwe're going to be competitive in the MAC we still need to learn how to close out games....too many missed free throws, and unforced TOs. Hey we beat a very solid team tonight so great job Coach Murphy, and EMU team!!

I'm not really an X and Os type guy but Chad asked Murphy about a 1-3-1 and Murphy said it may have looked like it but it wasn't (and then explained why).

My only other X and Os comment is that OU was completely defenseless defending JT4, denying him the ball, etc.

If JT4 is the "Shaq of the MAC" (21st century edition, Gary Trent was the 20th century version) OU should have fouled him, etc. (but JT4 shoots FTs well so that is a loser strategy too).

I'm not enough of a X and O's man to know how to defend JT4 other than try to deny him the ball.

Either that of get in the ref's ear and pray...

Interesting Steve that Murphy said it wasn't a 1-3-1......I noticed that we started out with our typical 4-1 zone and transitioned in and out between 4-1 to 1-3-1. When James was down low and we denied the paint Kampe could not figure out how to beat it. When EMU plays 4-1 zone and leaves the free throw line unguarded we are vulnerable for a 2 on 1 against Thompson. A 1-3-1 protects Thompson a bit when he's in foul trouble. However, a 1-3-1 zone is vulnerable if the offensive team is patient and has shooters at the corners (see Akron game against us last year). Thankfully Akron coach is gone :-)

There are two ways to stop JT4: 1) Double team him front and back with front man denying him the ball. 2) Get him in foul trouble - can't hurt you on the bench :-)

If a team plays JT4 man to man in the post, I'll take JT4 against 90% of the NCAA centers. He should touch the ball virtually every possession.

BTW, the only way Grant Long, Marcus Kennedy, etc. played better than JT4 did last night is if they were 12 for 11... and that ain't possible. Can't beat 11 - 11 from the field...

Lot of teams are double and triple teaming JT4. If we shot well from behind the arc we'd kill some very good teams. The only way they beat us is when he makes turnovers when he holds the ball too long and then has to try to pass out and the passing lanes are clogged.

Groce continues to contribute in all sorts of different ways, glad to see Nobles starting. I hope Harris will get his act together and give us some quality minutes. I see more confidence in Ellison every time he hits the floor, another guy who we need quality minutes from. Hopefully the bench see some minutes against Central State.

Dear Friends,
I was at the game last night, and there us no doubt that Thompson played great, but Minnie was the player of night, in my opinion. Nobles also did very nice, and Bond played well too.
The thing Eastern has to improve on is the unforced turnovers. We threw the ball out of bounds at least seven times during the game. Can't keep doing that and expect to beat good teams. On the positive side of things, defensively we intercepted Oakland passes about half dozen times. Nice win.

RE: Game Day: Oakland
that was a great game! good win. it was awesome to be able to see this team live.

my thoughts:
- calling the defense a 1-3-1 vs a new version of the 2-2-1 is semantics, but the results were great. when we played it correctly, we denied the free throw line. still an issue with the short baseline, but the guys playing the second "two" in the 2-2-1 (Bond, Minnie, Groce) did a great job.
- Love Thompson. he's a beast.
- Minnie had a great second half. i have a feeling he'll be like Fedorov - he's so skilled and the game comes so easily to him that we're going to get frustrated when he doesn't score 20 every game. luckily, he's scored 20 most games. it's tough to know if he's disinterested or if he's just waiting for the right moments.
- i'm now 100% sold on Jackson. love that guy. he makes a lot of good decisions.
- Groce looks a little unsure of himself out there, particularly on defense, but he has piles of potential. the dude is an amazing athlete.
- Timmy Bond was able to get into the lane whenever he wanted, and he made some good decisions to pass out when he got in the trees down there.
- Nobles and McAdoo are both aggressive on defense. i love it. they are going to annoy a lot of opposing players.
- our offense looked better than normal. partially because of the talent on this team, and partially because it seems like they understand their roles on offense. i'll lay off my "this offense has no coherence" mantra that i've repeated the last few years.

RE: Game Day: Oakland
Good report, Aaron. Yes, Murphy implemented a new offense this year.

I believe vs. the UNF zone it was a 'box and one' with Bond being the one.

Apparently more structure and more ability to play themselves vs. a zone.

I loved the plays where the players would race back to their defensive zones and bingo here would come a pass which they promptly intercepted. Good defense and good entertainment, too.
