I shouldn't have alluded to academics since that is true for both square and round pegs. Those schools you mentioned are mostly looking for squares. The point I am trying to make is that there is less competition for the round pegs. I think we can recruit them, because most aren't.

If the round pegs are big strong o-linemen and stud running backs and NFL prospect drop-back passers, I would not say that most aren't. Most are, and that means we get hind teat after the P5's.

I posted a list earlier of the kinds of talent I think we can get. They are probably better suited to an offensive scheme other than pro-style power running and drop-back passing. Something like RUOwls's West Coast offense or the flexbone--or if I had my favorite, the Erk Russell/Bob Wagner/Paul Johnson combination of the two.

Here is a video of Tracy Ham running it at Georgia Southern:

And here is Garrett Gabriel running it at Hawaii:

ETA: And here it is at Hawaii with a very different kind of QB:

That last one looks more like Hat's offense. Same offense, different personnel. It is a very versatile scheme.

I would modify it a bit to include a tight end, who could also split or flex or line up as an H-back in different formations. I still think we want to be able to recruit tight ends and fullbacks, because in today's football those are square pegs. Stanford recruits them, which may be what you were alluding to, but a lot of spread teams don't, and that means we can maybe get some better athletes than we can by recruiting the same round pegs that are in demand for the P5s, and also they are the kinds of athletes who can contribute on special teams and convert to defense if you need them more there.
