UCF hires Josh Heupel as new head coach
They will now go back to being irrelevant. Heupel was the OC here in Logan at USU, it was almost declared a holiday when he left. Fans of UCF will come to love the bubble screen. While he may surprise me, I figured UCF could have done better.

RE: UCF hires Josh Heupel as new head coach
You wonder what drives that hire backstage. I'm sure working with agents/lawyers who play contracted staff against their employers wear thin when certain agents/lawyers are involved. Still, if Heupel is atop the AAC next season and we're talking about another NY6 bowl, dude's gone.

Safe bet is he's a couple of years away from that spot, and that's not a bad thing to UCF admins. They can stop wasting their time fretting over a football coach's employment status with the school.

Sumlin would have been a better hire. Heupel is interesting but perhaps he's grown as a playcaller.

I think people need to give coaches a chance, instead of worrying about the big name. Big names typically don't guarantee success unless your name is Saban.

Jason Candle from Toledo was tossed around a bunch, unless he pulled out I can't see why they'd choose Heupel over him.

RE: UCF hires Josh Heupel as new head coach
This hire is not surprising at all, IMO. AAC programs have made a concentrated effort to hiring young, up-and-coming coaches, that will one day (hopefully) be P5 head coaches. Between Herman, Frost, Fuente, Norvell, Morris, Montgomery, those are all offensive-minded head coaches. Herman, Frost, and Fuente became head coaches at top P5 programs.

Conversely, in recent years, Cincinnati and UConn made bad hires with retread former head coaches in Tuberville and Pasqualoni. It directly impacted them to hire younger coaches in Fickell and Diaco (which also didn't work out, but you get the point).

I think UCF made the right choice in staying away from Sumlin. Heupel I think will be a good hire. May not have been as splashy as Frost, who came from Oregon, but I think he will keep the momentum moving forward (especially with Shannon as his DC).

Bottom line, I love the trend of the new AAC coaches (young, offensive and future P5 head coaches). It benefits the AAC because they get these skilled young minds leading their programs, then can do it again if/when they leave. Everyone benefits.

Yup, young coaches need a stepping stone to power jobs. Sorry, I couldn't resist. 05-stirthepot 03-lmfao

UCF hired 2 former Big 12 QBs as their head coaches. Do you see a connection there by saying they want to be in a P5 conference?

Yup, and Clemson, FSU, Miami, VT needs stepping stone wins against NCState to make playoffs and NY6 games, something the wolf pack have not been a part of for generations.

It worked for schools that hired Urban Meyer and Mark Richt too.
