Strangely enough, that's Woodfin's position: That Birmingham needs to do something or stop talking about it. That said, his non-commital attitude is doing nothing but dragging it out further. He should show some leadership and stake a claim one way or another, but I have a feeling this is a preview of his entire term in office where he is going to let others take center stage

Sooner or later a city HAS to invest in its facilities or it will cease to be the destination it once was. It'll cease to bring in the tax money from out-of-town/over the mountain guests, and the city will dry up. Woodfin is too smart to not know this.

He says the city needs to either build it or stop talking about it? One of those choices is impossible, so he should just say the city needs to build a stadium, and I'm going to make it happen in a responsible way.

Weren't the increases in lodging & rental car taxes supposed to go to the football/BJCC plans?
If so, how much $ has been raised?

I think they also increased the sales tax to 10% and doubled business license fees.
This was when Larry was in office ~ 2008. It was supposed to generate $70m a year.

I do think some was used for Regions Park (which should only have used 1 years worth).

Some of that money is tied up in Regions Field as someone else already noted, but it also isn't 100% of what is needed to build the BJCC project. Some of the project will be covered with that money (along with some of the savings from refinancing the 1% school sales tax) but the BJCC is asking the County and the City to help with overage.

If it gets down to it, can the BJCC stadium get done without any city of bham funding?

It doesn't mean they've given up on the idea though. Pulled until they could "evaluate further". It will come back.

This article with quotes from the council sounds like they are still operating under the same delusion.

Where are we gonna get funding for a stadium if the trustees AND our fearless president won't even entertain the university putting up bonds to fund a stadium?

Ray Watts must go. We need a visionary now, not a toadie.

Why do they keep comparing it to "The Ted"??? That's a 25 year old baseball stadium that was originally built for the olympics, not a 90 year old stadium that has been mismanaged for 20+ years. Also, that was a Georgia State funded venture, not a city one.

If Birmingham were to gift LF to UAB, what would you want to do with it???

See 58-56 post #20 and add in my suggestion that the city give the whole park (Legion Field is only a fraction of that whole space) to UAB for a West Campus to roughly double the area of the present UAB undergrad campus. As Attalla suggested, the stadium could be sold for scrap and a new OCS erected if neither of the two downtown alternatives is built. I have no fondness for Legion Field, but if "gifted to UAB", it may be found to be tolerable for awhile longer since UAB's funds are committed elsewhere for some time.

I know Jonathan Austin had purpose lightrail a few years ago, now he is gone and nothing has been said in a couple years about it.

Just wondering, since we don't seem to control the stadium situation in any way, if they were to bandage up LF, would a light rail route from campus to the stadium help in any way???

This argument between the old and a new is so tiring, I just wish something would happen and we could move on. Otherwise we will always be in limbo, and that sucks.

You'd need about a mile to a mile and a half, depending on where on campus you located the station. That's probably $50 to $75 million, making a really raw guess (recent costs have been $43 mill/mile in Norfolk to $205 in Milwaukee). Some expenses would be on the high end since you're not able to spread the cost of the rolling stock over a larger system, though the land should be mostly condemnable.

I love light rail, but it's probably more realistic to build a walkable greenway from campus to Legion Field, connecting to Railroad Park and on to Sloss.

Looking at a map, wonder if they used the existing rail lines from railroad park towards LF, how much would it cost. They could buy land south of LF towards Hwy 11, with a station. Wouldn't drop you further from the stadium then the most eastern part of the existing parking lot.

That was part of Austins idea, was to use existing rail lines.

Side note, I'd like to see the property of LF and Rickwood joined with an entertainment district, hotels, meeting spaces. A lot of money, but would completely change that area of the city.
