Yeah, it's not dead. It's even worse. They want to spend $100 million on it. This is the City Council saying they aren't going to be involved with the BJCC project

http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/index....river_home

Quote:The project is part of a proposed $100 million plan to redevelop the Smithfield community by addressing housing, infrastructure and parks and greenspace.

Council members spoke largely in favor of the proposed project during Tuesday's council meeting.

"(Legion Field) isn't in the shape that most ... think it is," she said. "It is very structurally sound. You have to invest in it."

Councilor Steven Hoyt said Legion Field needs to be revitalized.

"I just want to remind the public that Alabama doesn't have a new stadium," he said. "They have a renovated stadium. Auburn doesn't have a new stadium. They have a stadium that has been added to and renovated."

That last quote is Hoyt saying that the Council wants UAB to stay in Legion Field.

Attala, better break out plan B

Hoyt and Scales are idiots.

Whatever plan b is, I hope we're ready to act. How long does Clark stick around with the status quo of Legion Field?

They may be corrupt, and they may be idiots, but they are on the city council. It's kind of silly to dismiss them

Not sure how you got that statement being a dismissal.

It looks like it's more of the same for Birmingham. Apathetic people electing known criminals and self serving politicians .
Until the city elects leaders that have everyone's best interest at heart, and without concern for their own ego or checkbook, my hometown will continue to be broken in every way conceivable.

I know Jonathan Austin had purpose lightrail a few years ago, now he is gone and nothing has been said in a couple years about it.

Just wondering, since we don't seem to control the stadium situation in any way, if they were to bandage up LF, would a light rail route from campus to the stadium help in any way???

This argument between the old and a new is so tiring, I just wish something would happen and we could move on. Otherwise we will always be in limbo, and that sucks.

You'd need about a mile to a mile and a half, depending on where on campus you located the station. That's probably $50 to $75 million, making a really raw guess (recent costs have been $43 mill/mile in Norfolk to $205 in Milwaukee). Some expenses would be on the high end since you're not able to spread the cost of the rolling stock over a larger system, though the land should be mostly condemnable.

I love light rail, but it's probably more realistic to build a walkable greenway from campus to Legion Field, connecting to Railroad Park and on to Sloss.

Looking at a map, wonder if they used the existing rail lines from railroad park towards LF, how much would it cost. They could buy land south of LF towards Hwy 11, with a station. Wouldn't drop you further from the stadium then the most eastern part of the existing parking lot.

That was part of Austins idea, was to use existing rail lines.

Side note, I'd like to see the property of LF and Rickwood joined with an entertainment district, hotels, meeting spaces. A lot of money, but would completely change that area of the city.

This light rail talk is just bizarre. Ain't happenin'. Stop it.

Unfortunately, Birmingham doesn't have the private sector money to "buy" the public opinion of elected officials. Bottom line is that Birmingham's "old money" has been squandered by grandkids and great grandkids, and the money that is left is funneling to UA and AU interests as they relate to sports. College, Pro, whatever.

Bottom line, until you can get past the socioeconomic divide that is Division Street...Bham isn't moving forward.

You can't legislate change in the Bham City Limits from the suburbs.

Hell at this point...just keep putting bleachers around BBVA Field until we hit 25k capacity and be done. I don't know why we don't continue to explore that option. Budget and build 4-5k in seats a year and we'd have an on campus stadium before we know it.

Weren't the increases in lodging & rental car taxes supposed to go to the football/BJCC plans?
If so, how much $ has been raised?

And not spent elsewhere.
