New Year's Eight Bowls?
If the New Year's Six were to expand to the New Year's Eight (not that this is likely), which two bowls would be added? The poll consists of NFL stadiums, which I'm told are the best sites for New Year's bowls due to their amenities. If you think they'd be held elsewhere, feel free to vote for one or both of the "Other" options and share your suggestion in a post!

RE: New Year's Eight Bowls?
You missed the most likely addition to the top level bowl ranks of them all: the Citrus Bowl. That has long been the highest paying bowl outside of the BCS/CFP system by a fair margin and with the recent renovation to its stadium, it would be #1 on the list.

The new Las Vegas stadium would also be intriguing. My main criteria for a top tier bowl site is if it's a place that you'd want to visit in December/January completely outside of bowl trip purposes and both Orlando and Las Vegas certainly fit the bill.

Absolutely agree. Destination locations and more flexibility for great matchups.

In the NY8 scenario, the PAC should contract with either the Fiesta or new Las Vegas bowl and the Big 12 should contract with the Cotton for guaranteed landing spots for their #2 teams.

Does the Citrus Bowl have NFL-type amenities? And would the current conferences tied in to it be willing to sacrifice control?

I'd guess that when the +1 expands to a real playoff, the first round would be the week after the conference championships and on campus.

Well, the NFL is effectively making Camping World Stadium into the new permanent home for the Pro Bowl, so the league at least finds the facilities to be sufficient on that front.

Whether the current conferences tied in would sacrifice control is a different story since it involves the same parties that control the Orange Bowl (SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Notre Dame). Of course, the Citrus Bowl could certainly be elevated and the conferences could retain the control just in the same way as the Rose, Sugar and Orange Bowls are contract bowls. Having conference tie-ins and becoming a top level bowl aren't mutually exclusive. Remember that all of the contract bowls have to give up their tie-ins to be a semifinal once every three years, so those are the years where someone like the Citrus picks up those tie-ins would effectively be a wash.

Las Vegas wouldn't be in the running. The hotels are already packed enough for NYE. There is a reason why they like the pre-Christmas bowl and will be in the running for the CFP Championship game though.

I do think an expansion to a NY8 would result in all the P5 conferences securing contracts for at least their #1 and #2 teams. Here's my proposal from another thread, slightly modified:

Rose (Pasadena, CA): Big Ten #1 vs. Pac-12 #1
Sugar (New Orleans, LA): Big 12 #1 vs. SEC #1
Cotton (Arlington, TX): Big 12 #2 vs. At-Large
Orange (Miami Gardens, FL): ACC/ND #1 vs. At-Large
Peach (Atlanta, GA): ACC/ND #2 vs. SEC #2
Citrus (Orlando, FL): Big Ten #2 vs. At-Large (or ACC #2 if ND in Orange or Peach)
Fiesta (Glendale, AZ): Pac-12 #2 vs. At-Large
8th bowl (Vegas/Houston?): At-Large vs. At-Large

* at least one of the At-Large teams must be from the G5

I really don't think so (despite all of the faux complaints from hypocritical college administrators about the season being "too long" if it goes into January).

Remember that the bowls are the contractual mechanism through which the P5 retains control. The G5 might not like it, but the only way to get anything done is via that contractual mechanism. JRSec had a very good point in another thread: "auto-bids" for the P5 in a larger playoff is the wrong term. Instead, they need to be set up as "contract bowls" (as that allows the P5 to argue that they're simply making exclusive contracts individually with different bowls based on free market principles) where all of the winners of those contract bowls then advance to the playoff. The G5 may or may not have representation in that system, but the entire crux of it all is that the first round needs to be in the bowls.

Plus, to paraphrase The Simpsons: "Won't someone think of the children?!" That is, what has always bothered me about the proposal to have December playoff games at campus sites is that the "reward" for 4 of the most elite teams in the sport would be a road game in December in places like Tuscaloosa or Columbus and then get sent home for the holidays if they lose, while schools that had much worse records get to enjoy New Year's Eve in places like Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles, New Orleans, etc. That might be more of a superficial issue, but it irks me nonetheless.

I somewhat agree with that thinking, although Orlando has the same issue yet they still run multiple bowls during the week between Christmas and New Years. (Believe me - I've spent several New Years Eve evenings at Disney World and it's insane in terms of crowd levels.)

In the December playoff scenario, why wouldn't the playoff losers still play in NY6 or NY8 bowl games? All the CCG losers: Auburn, Wisconsin, Miami, Stanford, TCU, Memphis, Fresno, North Texas, and Akron, still play in bowl games this year, like many CCG loser teams before them.

What about the Citrus as a cash cow bowl for its existing tie-ins?

That would have to be given up to get it into the CFP rotation.

It's unrealistic to have the first round of the playoffs to play during the week after the conference championship games (which is what's typically proposed) and then for the losers to then get sent to bowls on such short notice. Much different for current conference championship game losers that have a month of travel planning for what is already an expensive and high demand holiday travel period. For that matter, it would be the same issue for the winners of those games, too (where they only have 2 weeks to plan a massive vacation to a high winter vacation demand place like California, Florida, etc. that would be tough even without a bowl game incorporated). Plus, we've seen that those conference championship game losers generally aren't great for ticket sales: those are the fan bases that are most dejected and often are NOT happy to be there (and therefore unmotivated to travel and buy tickets). I would imagine that the losers of playoff games would be even worse - they want nothing to do with consolation games at that point.

This is why my most preferred format is to use the bowls as the first round and then have on-campus sites for the *second* round (when it's after the holidays and it's tougher to travel). That provides a much bigger incentive to get ranked as high as possible (more so than where they get sent to for a neutral site bowl game), gives every elite team and a fan base a bowl experience, but then cuts down on overall travel fatigue for those fan bases. This is obviously putting aside logistical concerns (e.g. whether stadiums are winterized in the North), but in a vacuum, I think that provides the best of both worlds much more so than the flip side of on-campus first round games with fewer teams going to the bowls.

Or divorce the playoffs from the bowls and make the bowls simply what they were 40 years ago, simple exhibition games.

I’d only be interested in adding the Heart of Dallas and Sun. College football’s 2 classic bowl venues right after Rose.

Well, the Heart of Dallas Bowl is actually played at the Cotton Bowl, which is already a New Year's bowl. And the Sun Bowl is in El Paso, AKA the middle of nowhere. 03-wink
