I think that would make 6 teams and get the politics out of it.

Five conference champs, the G5 representative, and two at-large bids. Eight team tourney.

That would be perfect

Would be great. The biggest obstacle to this has been the majority of B1G university Presidents voting against it and instructing their very powerful representative to follow their wishes. Should they have a change of heart, we will most likely get our 8 team playoff.

Yeah it might go to 8 teams but I doubt they'll reserve a spot for a G5 team. It'll just be P5 conference winners and 3 at large bids. And good luck getting that unless you're 12-0/13-0 and have one or two good P5 wins

They are getting in based off their years of history and dominance and potential tv ratings with a matchup with Clemson. Their schedule this year was garbage. Playing Mercer at the end of the year? Never playing an out of conference opponent on the road, always at a neutral site. They get away with a lot with their cupcake scheduling. Yea the SEC is strong but there’s also a lot of awful teams like Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

I can't wrap my brain around how a team that wins their conference is bypassed for a team that did not.

When there only four spots available, it should be a requisite that winning a conference is part of the criteria. Yes, that limits each conference to only one team, however it seems ridiculous that the Pac 10 and Big 10 have no representative playing for all the marbles.

I thought it was ridiculous last year when Ohio State was selected for the playoff over the team that won the conference they played in.

The most talented teams are not always the best teams. The best teams win their conference.

Harrumph! Harrumph! Harrumph!

Best team in the nation? You are not even the best team in your conference. And maybe they should not allow anyone with two losses either.

Of course, my standards would present a problem this year. If we disqualify Alabama for not winning their conference, then who replaces them? Ohio State with two losses, or USC with two losses? It would have to be undefeated UCF. Hopefully it would not resemble Park County Pee Wee vs the Detroit Red Wings.

RE: Alabama Rant
My perfect scenario would be ...

12 teams.

1st round (Neutral Sites) based on this years rankings...
12. UCF vs. 5. Ohio St
11. Washington vs. 6. Wisconsin
10. Miami vs. 7. Auburn
8. USC vs 9. Penn St

Under a 8 team playoff, a really strong team like Penn St gets left out. A version of the above matchups will happen in Bowls anyway, might as well make them part of the playoff and get even bigger ratings ($$$)

Top 4 get a first round bye and a home playoff game (reward for finishing in the Top 4)

G5 not guaranteed a spot. They get it if they finish in the Top 12.

Totally disagree. Big 10 fans are terrible. Always been treated well by SEC fans.
I suspect that you'd feel differently if you lived down here. Listen to Paul Finebaum on ESPN radio for a taste.

A Div1a playoff needs a G5 representative inorder to represent all 130 programs.
Any team that wins out no matter how weak sos should have a chance to play for the National title.

RE: Alabama Rant
Yeah, I agree with the 8-team playoff won't get a G5 Champ. At best, all it'd do is say a G5 in the Top 10 may squeeze in.

With an 8-team playoff, it'd basically be: P5 Conf Champs Get In (5). Top 3 at-larges ranked. Probably a 2-team MAX from a P5 conference unless the 3rd is in the Top 5. But even then, it wouldn't extend very far down. A G5 Champ will typically be #12-#18, ymmv. But how high ranked would a ND or G5 to get into an 8-team playoff with a Conf restriction like that, which wouldn't be that strict anyway? Right now:

1. Clemson*
2. Oklahoma*
3. Georgia*
4. Alabama
5. Ohio State*
6. Wisconsin
7. USC* (Auburn Nixed)
8. Miami-FL (Penn State Nixed)
* = P5-Champ; Auto-Invite

So #10 Miami-FL could get in. How often would a G5 Champ be ranked #10? Past 6 years, None. Before that? 6 / 10 years. All Boise when they were at their peak (and TCU who's not G5 anymore).

Last 16 Years Top G5 Rankings Going into Bowl Season:
2017: #12 UCF
2016: #15 WMU
2015: #18 Houston
2014: #20 Boise State
2013: #20 Fresno State [#15 UCF was P6; last P6 year for AAC/Big-East]
2012: #15 NIU
2011: #7 Boise State
2010: #3 TCU, #10 Boise State
2009: #4 TCU, #7 Boise State
2008: #9 Boise State
2007: #18 Hawaii
2006: #9 Boise State
2005: #14 TCU
2004: #10 Boise State
2003: #14 Miami-OH
2002: #19 Boise State

Basically, I wouldn't count on it too much. And even being #10 wouldn't get a ND or G5 in necessarily. #9 would be almost a given. The way things are now, we'd get 1, maybe 2 G5s every 10 years? People like the Cinderalla factor. Even saying G5 if they're Top 10 -- would still fume a P5 2nd-placer (or ND) big. Don't think that'd go thru on such a small #.

That's why I think the more Realistic option would be to just take the 12 NY6 teams -- and make them ALL in a playoff, not just the Top 4 right now being in a semi-final playoff. That'd solve pretty much everything. You get the Top G5 in there, no complications or new tricks up the sleeve needed.

Yea, he's pretty funny. The best point is that every level of football has a real playoff except Division I FBS.
