I wasn't a fan of promoting an OC that doesn't call plays, but Walters has grown on me quite a bit as an option the more I think about it. A lot of that is more about the circumstances around the league.

Look at what a rough year to hire coaches this is. Sumlin would have been our home run hire? Herm Edwards? Schiano? Florida had to settle for Dan Mullen (not a bad hire, but way more conservative than their fans wanted). If schools can avoid looking like ASU or Tennessee this year, that's a win.

Also, the players LOVE him. He is the only link we have to the chemistry of the team this year. Can he preserve the chemistry that Frost created? I don't know, but I think there is a better shot of Walters keeping a winning culture than someone else creating it from scratch.

He was my pick all along. He is closest to the program and knows the kids well and has their respect. He may not have called the plays, but he lived the play calling for the past two years. I think since their are no great splash hires this year, its worth it to give him a shot. If it does not work out, there is always next year to look elsewhere.

My main concern is him developing a decent football staff.

did frost call plays at oregon or was that mark helfrich? i thought frost had the kind of OC relationship with helfrich that walters had with frost.

IF you folks do take Candle, then there's already some fan interest up here in Walters as a HC. We could more than double his salary, so if he wants to be a HC and not stay an OC (whether at Nebraska or UCF), then there's a chance you lose him.

Best for Toledo & UCF: you guys hire Walters & we keep Candle (at least for another season).

lol ok...

I think you're safe. Candle isn't exactly exciting the UCF fan base. His only experience is Toledo. His recruiting connection is solely Ohio.

It is looking more and more like Walters. The AD is doing his due diligence with Candle and others. Expect Walters, Randy Shannon as DC. Reggie Wayne as WRs coach and a couple more big names.

Rumor about his DC would be pretty cool if true

@BruceFeldmanCFB

I guess they are hoping that Josh can coach some more QB wonders like Sam Bradford and Landry Jones? Seems like a much better QB developer than an OC guru...

They better hire some DC strategic geniuses though - that side of the ball needs some help for UCF to stay dominant.

Also - I'm guessing they wanted another younger coach with playing experience?

Hope it works out for UCF! We need them (as a conference) to stay strong. Now if only the Bearcats can turn things around...03-banghead
