There were no divisions in the American/Big East prior to 2015.

Your schools left the CUSA for a better conference. If you want CUSA, you can go back and my old school Charlotte or any other left behind school would be more than happy to take your spot up in the American.

Notice that all those teams in the championships are now in the American except for USM for an obvious reason

The old CUSA WAS the AAC outside of Navy, Temple, and now WSU. Also telling that only USM pre AAC is the only non AAC school to make the title game
