Volleyball Coach Gone!
Perhaps unnoticed yesterday was the departure of the Women's Volleyball coach...surely a reflection of the AD's taking note of the awful record (3-24
this year) of this highly expensive, million dollar plus sport, featuring mucho-cost top of the line out-of-state scholarships to ladies from far away states.

Like a political announcement on a Friday it goes relatively unnoticed
heading into a weekend.

A new search is underway, hopefully for a coach that can win and recruit some good in-state volleyball players.

The sport can't go away since a similar cost men's sport would gave to go with it so why not get some good teams for all the money.

Did she resign or was she fired? She did not have much to start her tenure, so I am a bit surprised. Although their record was awful, I thought the team played hard all year.

RE: Volleyball Coach Gone!
Pudue has a great women's volleyball program while sponsoring less sports than W&M. How in the world do they do it?

Maybe we can get Purdue's coach.

Since W&M is on a big international student kick, why don't we get international volleyball players?

:-)

Sorry for all the juvenile sarcasm, but all this anti-volleyball stuff is just juvenile.

It's a great sport. It's not going anywhere, nor should it.

Agreed. I'm tired of volleyball and the Title IX bogeyman.

Anyway, looks like this was another good move by Huge. That's three different coaching decisions made since she's come on. And I really like all three. But even more I appreciate how aggressive she is being, it gives me a lot of hope that will spill over into other areas.

It is somewhat embarrassing to be this bad in volleyball year over year. Up where I live in Loudoun County we have some pretty strong teams and the Tribe doesn't have anyone on their roster. Lot's of smart girls players to pick from.

It would be easy to say that with a 3-24 record, apparently the players were not that good, whether from in-state or out-of-state. However, it looked to me like some of the underclasswomen were a better caliber than what we were used to. Julie Brown (Fr) looked good this year. So it seems that the former coach was in the process of recruiting better.

However, with a 3-24 record and a brand new AD who wants to make her mark on all facets of the program, this move had to be expected by the coaching staff.

By the way, other than your point about out-of-state scholarships, how expensive could volleyball be? You've got a net, one or two balls, and a bunch of knee pads. Much less equipment than field hockey, lacrosse, (football, baseball) ......

How do you know the team played hard all year? Were the matches televised?

Just look at the scores. Many of our games were closer than our record indicated. Most games weren't lopsided as our record showed.

Same, coaches get the option to resign, to avoid the stigma of being fired.

They’ve adapted to the future with their embracing on line ed. This translates to a better looking bottom line.

Yeah, that's why, and not the $25 million they get from the B1G Network.

That's the way Purdue rolled before the $$$ from the BIG Network.

Purdue also had diving boards before the $$$ from the BIG Network.

Also, before the $$$ from the BIG Network:

Purdue dropped field hockey. Purdue does not have men's soccer. No lacrosse for either gender.

Purdue does have wrestling and softball.

BTW, in 2014-2015, Purdue got $32,000,000 from the Big Ten. Of that $32,000,000, $1,000,000 was from the BIG Network. In 2015, Purdue received $21,500,000 from all media deals.

Back to the original point ... the suggestion by some on here to drop volleyball and do something else with the $$$ is juvenile.

Grow the pie. Don't start taking out essential ingredients, or restricting the choices.

I suggest we look at the pie and how it's sliced also. I'm all for growing the pie, but would also like to have sports that are played by Virginia High School students. If we're going to have about 75% in state students, let's not fill up rosters from out of state kids costing us much more per scholarship. People should go look at the rosters for all of the sports and see what I'm seeing.

So when will W&M get the CAA Network going?

Good one. So, if it devolves like most things CAA, W&M will do all the legwork and get the thing up and running and then come to find out that JMU, UD, Hofstra, NE, etc etc all get more air time than we do!03-banghead
