Billboard calling church 'fake news' causes stir
[Image: american-atheists-fake-news-billboard.jpg]

Quote:ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A new billboard on I-25 is causing some controversy.

The billboard on northbound I-25 near Montgomery tells people to "just skip church" and '"it's all fake news!" The phrases are written next to a nativity scene. Underneath, it says "Happy Holidays from American Atheists."

The billboard went up Wednesday, and it's not the only one. There are two in Dallas and five more going up in Oklahoma.

Richard Mansfield, a senior pastor at New Beginnings Church nearby, said the billboard has already offended some of his parishioners who've driven by it.

"I think they're trying to give a slap in the face to not only the Christian community but people that have faith and people that have hope," he said.

KOB reached out to American Atheists and asked if they meant the billboard to be offensive.

"We want people to realize we're starting a conversation by being a little funny and trying to be a little cheeky about it," said Nick Fish, the national program director for American Atheists. "We do want to get a rise out of them, but the idea is not to be offensive."

Fish said the billboard's goal is to start a conversation by reminding people that there are millions of atheists in the country.

"We want people to critically think about everything they're being told," he said. "We want people to think about what messages they're getting in church and think about the fact that in this country, we give a really big pass to preachers or churches or to religious beliefs that hold really abhorrent views."

Savage.

With that said, Christians now have the moral right to a retort. Let's see them get creative. I love a little back and forth action.

I’m sure their next act will be a Muhammad coloring book contest. Nah. Christians are safer to insult.

David Silverman, the president of the organization that put that billboard up can be reached at:

Dsilverman@athiests.org
on Twitter (@MrAtheistPants)
or at (908) 276-7300.

Ask when he and his organization of ******* will be insulting and publicly ridiculing Islam.

Most atheists I talk to are pretty anti-Islam. This is just a ribbing, and nothing more.

Thing is, you can't really go into the Middle East and enter into an argument with an Islamic state. You'd get killed. That's why the atheists get into jests with Christians. It's a far more peaceful religion at the moment.

Hard not to feel sorry for those atheists. They know not what they do.

Psalm 14:1 and Proverbs 1:7

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Why? There's no need.

It's childish nonsense that doesn't even really need a response.

While it’s definitely controversial, people who feel strongly about their views should be able to share them peacefully. Regarding what I put in bold, there may come a time where society no longer believes. If/when that happens, morality must go on regardless of the lack of religious institutions. Much of our morality is derived from sources independent of religion already. The U.S. constitution is one example of this.

The Constitution was based on religious beliefs in MHO.

But, what gets me is why do they care. If they don't believe in God then that's their problem. It's like the pebble that is hurting their feet is caused by the people who believe in God.

we've both written many a line item about this.....mine leans on the hardcore side how this eventually plays out.....

regardless, I really don't like repeating myself, and will continue to promote "GOOD" until my last breath......

like I hammered into my daughter from the earliest age, "always do your best (and it sometimes might not be good enough), AND never forget humility and respect when it comes to people.....you don't know what their environment is like and what swirls within their skull."

as a tyke, she once told me sitting on my lap, "dad, keep talking.....I don't understand, but it helps me go to sleep" ..... she reminded and thanked me this past Thanksgiving (by remembering those times) #verbatim......

it's tough bursting out in tears in front of your 18.4 yr old daughter as those words were spoken......was the happiest day of my life since witnessing her birth......

Like I said before....when the time comes if I'm wrong about my religion absolutely nothing will happen. If the atheists are wrong they face eternal damnation. I'll take that bet.

"athiest" is more of a red herring. they tend to be anti religion, and try to eliminate it where they can.

I once thought that way......it's why I chose my path having the ability to choose....

even if we disagree on principle, we still agree on the merits of right and wrong.....

in biblical terms, that's why Jesus became mankind's "savior"

we're all sinners......if there is one that judges, he's the only one that matters that knows me as well as me....

it only becomes an issue with me when preaching hell fire and brimstone is the only driver of the bus.....it's just like politics in my mind....

I'm hardly a pacifist, but I'm certain a proponent of respecting each individual to believe in whatever faith as long as it doesn't involve violence or disrespect until there isn't another option....

I'm unwavering on that one.....

I disagree with that. Much of the philosophy that went into the creation of the constitution came from the age of enlightenment plus ancient Greek philosophy - especially that of the republic. IMHO, these were not judeo-christian ideals as we knew them from the time Constantine first unified the church through the renaissance. Combine that with what we knew of the culture of the Israelites from around 1000 BCE to the Roman occupation and it makes our constitution starkly different from precedent. Again, JMHO.
