comparing UT -NIU 2017 team football stats
RE: Opening up the playbook/offense.
2017 regular season totals

NIU
529 rushes 2247 yards
377 passes 2365 yards

UT
498 rushes 2580 yards
357 passes 3488 yards

Rockets attempted fewer passes but gained 1000 yards more than NIU.
UT could throw deep ball for completions and we could not.

It does not appear to be a matter of NIU's offensive run to pass ratio and play selections but the inability of young QB to connect consistently midrange to deep.

if midrange to deep passing game is not your strength why would a QB/coach attempt more such plays?

Great info; it leads to an interesting comparison. If you were to prorate the numbers for Childers and Santa over the course of a full season, you not only see the difference between the two QBs but you also see one of the main reasons Carey opted for the conservative approach.

Childers completions-205; attempts-359; int-7.5; TD-23; yards 2160

Santa 248-388-20-28-2848

With Childers you complete less passes, throw for a lot less yards, but you turn the ball over a lot less. The team rushing numbers under Santa were not as different as I would have thought given the lack of running from the QB position when he played. What was interesting is Childers had numerous opportunities to complete deep passes, I cannot recall any that were completed. What is even more incredible...with all those incompletions on deep balls, I can only remember 1 int (CMU).
You would expect Santa’s turnovers to decline with the more game experience, but you never know. The bottom line, we had a real solid season; and Childers is now in a great position to be the QB of the future. He may leave his freshman season with more game experience than any other freshman QB in our program’s history.
