Dumb Question: Is MTSU playing FGCU twice this year?
I was just looking ahead to Saturday's games and saw MTSU will play FGCU... I recall this looking familiar. So I went to check to see which CUSA team FGCU played earlier this year, and it was .. MTSU. Curious! Am I slow? Has this already been discussed? I am very interested in how this came to be. I ask because how cool would it be if this were a thing, we could schedule out of conference rivalries twice a season if they both agree. This could be another way for good mid major programs to get two quality OOC games in a year if scheduling becomes difficult.

RE: Dumb Question: Is MTSU playing FGCU twice this year?
When Kermit and FGCU's coach were communicating about scheduling the game they got to talking about what a hard time they were having getting viable RPI opponents, so Kermit suggested that they just play a home and home against each other. And here we are.

No. These games were scheduled this way months ago as TIBL stated above.

Two other good teams did an in-season home-and-home last year, or maybe the year before. Was that you guys as well?

It's actually a very elegant solution to the scheduling problem; if you only can get three good OOC opponents at your level, why not do the Ernie Banks thing? Between that and inter-conference challenges/scheduling agreements, it provides a bulwark against the increasingly difficult task of getting big-time programs to play you anywhere but at their place for a pittance.

I think it's a pretty simple and brilliant solution to a problem. I wonder if we could agree to a home-and-home with VCU every year?

Dumb Question: Is MTSU playing FGCU twice this year?
A couple of the independents scheduled some of these (maybe Liberty & NMSU?) also UNT apparently plays somebody twice every year, last year it was ARMY and this year FAU 03-wink

We played Toledo twice last year, one as part of a neutral site tourney in Nashville, and one at our place.

They did this in football because of both being indy (NMSU will be by the time they play) and having scheduling difficulties.

Wait a second... Are the self proclaimed scheduling experts (Many ODU fans) complementing MT on their basketball scheduling?

We've also done a home and home with Belmont in the same season.

Agreed on this being smart scheduling.

It would be a great thing for the rivalry with VCU. As evidenced by twitter, both bases still take great joy in hating the other.

I think that's what I'm thinking of. I know that teams in the same early-season tournaments sometimes play each other, and it ends up being they play twice in very short order (I want to say VCU and WKU played each other almost back-to-back a few seasons ago?) But actually scheduling a home-and-home is pretty rare, though maybe becoming less so.

Maybe we should trade the W&M game for a 2nd VCU game so we can pick up another win

Marshall has employed the in-season home-and-home numerous times over the years. I think we've done it with Belmont, Chattanooga, and twice with James Madison.

While I hate the recent results, I enjoy making that trip every other year. It could replace the game being used for JMU now. That's not an interesting series to me at all.

New Mexico and NMSU do a home and home every year. Also, NMSU and UTEP play home and home every year pretty much also.

Playing a good mid-major > A D3 school, so yes.

I went to a FGCU game on a trip to MLB spring training earlier this year. Nice campus.

I think it would be a great idea to schedule regional rivals twice a year. As a Hilltopper fan I would love to play Belmont or someone like that twice a year. Good for fans to travel and it saves money.
