Larry is a great guy and was in over his head. Tubby is NOT in over his head, he's coasting about as badly as I've seen a coach coast ever. When we hired him, my first words on this board were 'dreadful hire.' I understand why Tubby (and Saul) wanted to leave Lubbock, but it was obvious to me from Tubby's time in Minnesota and in Lubbock that he had checked out and was looking for some retirement $$$'s.

Coaching is incredible demanding profession and if you're not really, really committed you'll outhustled for recruiting and out-prepared during the season. The lack of talent on our roster is astonishing. The fact that we are losing Memphis HS recruits shows just how badly our program has fallen.

I think that is probably the biggest reason Opie was given such a long leash: the guy flat out hustles on the recruiting trail, no doubt about it. Boosters knew that Opie was still hustling on the recruiting trail.

It was destroyed when tubby arrived, imo.

It was destroyed when Tubby got here. No question. BUT it wasn't for lack of effort. Pastner sucked but he made an effort.
Tubby doesn't seem to make any effort. Especially off the court. And to top it off, the staff's eye for talent is clearly just not very good.
It's pathetic really.

Nobody wants to be right about this. I’m not a negative fan, I’m yelling at the top of my lungs the same way I would be if a tidal wave was coming toward the shore. I’m utterly depressed and freaked out about this. If enough people know maybe we can stop it somehow.

To think that anyone would be okay with what this program is right now is beyond me. It’d be okay if it’s all highly rated freshmen that we just need to give time to, like when Larry had Ced and Chris in their freshmen year.

Anyone who took anything like a close look at (1) Tubby's last 10 years; (2) The complete and utter disregard Tubby had for his first recruiting class; and (3) took anything like a close look at Tubby's staff' especially Saul knew this was very likely going to be a disaster.

Tubby's second class, while not great was solid UNITL he ran off / allowed to leave four (4) top 100 players while replacing them with zero (0) players of equal or better talent. Had he held on to those guys and made it work and ADDED the three freshmen to that group this team would be far better.

As it is; the 9th -12th place finish in the AAC now seems likely. At Memphis with all it's tradition; facilities, support, and available coaches' salary this should never, ever happen. If it does, immediate change needs to occur.

Tubby and crew have simply mismanaged a situation that should have been easy for them.

UAB's coach makes $450,000 / year and has **** for facilities, plays in a **** league, and has **** for fan support. The situation is out of hand and IMO unsalvageable. It didn't have to be this way but Tubby was lazy at the start; didn't read the tea leaves correctly with the Lawson situation, and rammed Saul down everyone's throat.

Again, does he not understand that sneaking into the NCAA tournament as an 8-12 seed and flaming out in the first weekend will not move the needle at Memphis?

You realize that Tubby inherited a team with 4 top 100 players and quickly turned it into a team with zero top 150 players? Yes, Pastner was bad, but at this point you can't even compare the two.

We have no talent on the way. Pastner never signed a player as lowly ranked as Vanover. Wake up.

I was all for being patient but with this roster and the debacle of not getting Lomax or Harris this is beyond repair imho.

I tried.

When he was hired, I thought, "hey, he can coach. He can probably get a few good players locally(not just Memphis but surrounding areas). Maybe they won't be 5 stars but that's okay, he can coach them up."

Those were pretty much my thoughts. Some said he wasn't a good recruiter, but I was on the "let's see" wagon.

Well, here we are. As far as recruits, Davenport, Johnson, Nickleberry are decent and since two are freshman they can develop into nice players. Davenport would be a great role player on a good team but for us he's the star and number one option.

Future recruits: 1 player and it doesn't look like there's another in sight.

Current team is just completely overmatched.

Something to add about Saul.... I heard from someone in the media (not going to say who, it wouldn’t be fair) that Donna runs everything and Saul is on the staff because of Donna and the chances of Saul being removed from the staff is almost zero because Donna would end up going off on Tubby.
Obviously I don’t know if all of that is accurate.

You may be right but I don’t think so. I think the money guys and the fans have waited long enough to get back to winning. My thinking is they will reach in their pockets to get the program back on track.
