SDSU outlines plan for Mission Valley stadium site
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/busi...story.html

Quote:The list includes an expandable 35,000-seat stadium for SDSU Aztec football games. The university said the facility could also accommodate professional soccer games as well as other sports and could be expanded if the NFL ever returns to San Diego.

Consultants valued the project at $3 billion but provided no breakdown for land acquisition or public improvements. The university plans to pay for the stadium without raising student fees or tapping state funds and developers would cover the cost of the commercial buildings and housing.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand the university in a location that is both close to the main campus and large enough to accommodate the university’s growth needs,” SDSU President Sally Roush said.

“It is a plan with the heart and spirit of a modern university campus that will serve higher education and the community’s aspirations for the site.”

SDSU officials said they would seek to purchase the 166-acre, city-owned site at fair market value.

The university, which has named the proposal “SDSU Mission Valley,” rolled out a conceptual plan and 15-year development plan at a press conference on campus. A second session is planned Thursday to discuss the new stadium design.

The plan also includes two hotels, 4,500 housing units for students, faculty and the public, retail space, office buildings to share with SDSU departments and researchers, and about 90 acres of parkland, plazas and walkways.
