He just acts like an immature idiot when he gets mad at a player. Part of the player response I am sure is a flight or fight response. I think a guy like German would be much more open to the criticism if Monty acted like a man about it . Something that bothered me last night too was with Thorpe. He had just come off a bad play on defensive end ( it escapes me now what it was) and then walking back offensively a player tried to pass it to him and it went out of bounds as he wasn't looking. He then chewed out the player in the open on the court for everyone It's just little selfish things like that which add up over time. It's hard to win in college basketball but it should not be hard to field a team of unselfish players. I'm not sure Thorpe/James were great additions in this respect

I know the two products can't be compared but seeing the team play and attitudes compared to the men was pretty sobering. If the men could all pattern themselves after Voigt things would be a lot better. I never thought things could be as bad as last year, but after seeing two games in person , there is a real toxic feel to me regarding the men's team. Not just being bad , but the attitude part of it.

I saw the men and women play back to back several times over the past couple years. What you are describing is exactly what I, too, saw.

It is a pleasure to watch the women's basketball team and an honor to be a season ticketholder. Coach Lisa was sent from the basketball gods. What a great lady and coach! It is a joy to watch how the women play together AS A TEAM, passing, assisting, patting each other on the back on the court and bench, cheering for each other, and they genuinely care for each other. It is great to see them smiling on the court. They enjoy the game of basketball and are having fun playing it. Watching women's basketball gives me more pleasure than watching any other sport. Yes, you CAN have fun and see great basketball in the Convo!

I think I've seen you say that in past and after seeing it finally first hand, I definitely see what you are talking about. The attitude issue seems to be somewhat culturally a problem now which is very disturbing

Men's basketball is in a real bind.

That's pretty sad if we are forced to hang on to MM for 3 more years. Why was a guy with his record given an extension? It's obvious by now that he cannot coach. Players are leaving early every year and his record continues to be well below 500. This program will reach Patton-level suckiness before 2020.

STF has to accept responsibility for this failure.

Only way out is if Monty "resigns" at the end of the season.

Owen Hamilton appears to be given up on already by Monty.

Holy overreaction. This is the most talented NIU team in Monty's tenure at NIU. They're magnificently inexperienced and that shows. Get over yourselves.

Inexperience and bad play I tolerate, the toxic other stuff which has plagued this program the past 5 years is still there, and unacceptable

The biggest problem is that they are inexperienced every year because the good players keep leaving.

It's still early in the year so it's still a wait and see thing, but I wonder if the talent will be utilized to its potential.

MD, you don't have the slightest clue of what goes on between Monty and his players, so don't speak on it.

The team has been "inexperienced" for the past 5 years...who does that fall on? I'm also not sure how the hell this is the most talented NIU team in Monty's tenure...and it's not like that is saying much even if it's true

The offense is better than last year, that isn't a question, but the defense is also worse than last year and the defense is much more worse than last year than the offense is better than last year.

100% agree. I don't think it's anything to sweat right now though. This team is blatantly different than the teams we have seen the past six years (in a good way).

Different in that it is more skilled offense than defense, but I see potential attitude/mutiny problems looming.

Well last night it happened within 10 feet of me lol, others saw it on the board too. Thorpe chewed out another player on the court, and Monty and German go into a heated argument on the bench. If you went to the games you would see this. Don't shoot the messenger just telling you what I observed and heard with my ears from Row 2

It isn't easy to build a program. If you add on the university's financial constraints (along with a handful of other issues within DeKalb), it's even more challenging. Monty took chances with a few guys and it didn't pan out. That was a learning point for everybody.

You can't oversimplify the task at hand just because you think the team should be past it already.

Yeah but when you see the same dysfunction the year after 4 players left, that is a cause for concern.

And notcredible you have no right to tell NIU fans they should not be expecting a winner this many year's after a coach has been here. Just because you have no expectations for the program, does not mean others should not.

Well look at you flexing about having second row seats. I was there too. Anyone that has been a part of a team understands that **** happens. Teammates get into it, and players get frustrated. Why shouldn't they? Yesterday was a frustrating game! I just think you're blowing the slightest thing out of proportion.

I just wanted you to know I saw it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. Well if you were there then you saw what happened too. Yeah that stuff happens with teams, but when you are coming off 5 years of toxic environments and you see signs of it continuing, one will assume the problems persist. You have to understand, people have been waiting for a winner for a long time here, when you see the program going backwards, its natural for people to vent and make their frustrations known.
