Childers?
I’m glad he got Freshman of the year.....but I’d be lying if I said I expected that to happen .

So there was no other Freshman in the entire league that made an impact?

RE: Childers?
I don't think anyone on this board expected Childers to win. I'm not saying that as a knock against him, but his stats weren't very remarkable.

To come in as 3rd stringer and perform how he did makes you excited for his future I think he saved this thing from sinking completely. Well deserved award

Childers performed really well - for a freshman.

He was average for a MAC QB.

I think it was deserved. I expect the off season and these type of accolades will only help him gain confidence. Confidence might be the only real ingredient missing, but next year will be telling. Off season workouts should include WR lining up to run routes for him, including many deep balls. I am very upbeat and optimistic for next year. I hope Santa sticks around, but hard to point the finger if he does not.

The two things I want Childers to work on this offseason are his deep ball accuracy and running from the pocket. It’s nice that he tries to keep plays alive, but if he would tuck and run more often he would be a more dangerous QB, IMO.

Given the mismanagement of the position , and his lack of reps Childers did an unbelievable job keeping NiU in MaC west contention

Another advantage of NIU adapting a real offense is that the QB may not need a body cast every week

RE: Childers?
Happy for the kid; let’s hope it boosts his confidence. The staff, in particular Carey, deserve a ton of credit for the kid getting this award. They could not have put this kid in a better position to grow and develop. They had his back when he was less than good, and they modified the offense to take advantage of his strengths and limit the impact of his weaknesses. They gave him nearly every conference snap. He will leave his freshman year as the most experienced QB on the roster. Childers was handeled perfectly, and I think the investment will ultimately pay off.

RE: Childers?
He won three close games (including two comebacks) and should have won two more if our coaches utilized our biggest strength on offense, Huff and Harbs. Childers needs to get better and will probably get much better. Hopefully, Santa, Hall, and Thompson will be breathing down his neck. I do agree he did not develop/improve as much as we had hoped. That leaves the QB competition wide open for the kid that works the hardest from now until next season.

Handled well in that Carey learned his mistake but not handled well in terms of Childers in an offense where the QB has virtually no
Chance of success right now. Also the mismanagement of the position in off-season hurt all quarterbacks on roster

You can’t expect to win every close game. Sometimes you win them, sometimes you don’t.

RE: Childers?
Childers biggest asset is his feel for the game. He makes good decisions and doesn't play like a freshman. Theres no reason to believe he won't improve his passing. And he will have to. Because what he is not is a dual threat QB. Running, unlike passing, isn't learned or improved through reps. Its innate. Childers looks like a slow twitch athlete. He runs well enough to pick up a first down on 3 and 5 if the called play breaks down, but I wouldn't design too many runs specifically for him. But this doesn't mean he can't be very successful. He has the arm strength and motion to be successful, he just needs to fine tune his accuracy.

The third and fourth things he needs to work on are his short passing game and his intermediate passing game.

Perhaps I am being too hard on him but my impression was that I was watching a kid that would struggle to start at a solid Division II or III level football program. He showed no ability in the passing game and I saw zero improvement as the season progressed.

Obviously others see more potential than I do and I hope that NIU has the coaching staff that can help him improve prior to the 2018 season. However, based on his lack of improvement during the 2017 season I am skeptical that we will see the needed improvement. He was the safe choice, Carey always goes with the safe choice and he left a kid that demonstrated far more upside nailed to the bench.

What? My bet is ference goes down as our best punter all time by his senior year. We finally don't give teams great positions each punt

here we go again with questioning the coaching decisions which apparently did little to prevent Childers from the recognition he earned.
