Post Season Accolades (Football)
1st Team All-ACC: James Smith (P)
2nd Team: Korey Cunningham & Jailiyn Minor
HM: Cortex Broughton

Bearcats also earn academic honors for having the highest accumulative GPA for the third straight season: 3.0.

RE: Post Season Accolades (Football)
Congratulations to these Bearcats for performing at a high level in a tough season.

I'm sure Fickell and company will push that info about having the highest accumulative GPA three years running too. That's a strong card to play with parents of recruits against schools that tout academics as a selling point but have no facts to back their argument. UC athletics needs to push that message out there to a broad audience as well.

At the game on Saturday and my 12-year-old asked me if any of the seniors might play in the NFL. I said Jaylyin Minor and Korey Cunningham.

Those guys might even get drafted.

One guy who might be an NFL sleeper is Lyndon Johnson. He has the type of size and athletic ability at his position that NFL scouts drool over. Played extremely well in the back stretch of the season. I could see him making a roster as an undrafted free agent.

I agree...he's the one who sticks out to me like an Adrien Robinson type. Physical specimen who looks the part and flashed a little but never actually got a run out. NFL teams have been around an seen the team, so they're definitely aware.

I think the only potential draftee is Cunningham, and he could be a solid reserve tackle in the NFL due to his versatility (player both sides for us) a la Jeff Linkenbach. I could be mistaken, but I don't believe he allowed a sack all year.

I can't believe the rage that went over me, when I read that name. I wish him a healthy and happy life, but I am overjoyed that he is no longer a bearcat.

RE: Post Season Accolades (Football)
It's severely understated because he's not a prototypical punter in frame and mechanics, but it needs to be said just how good of a season James Smith had this year.

He was an average punter by gross yardage at 42.0 (63rd nationally), but he was elite as far as net yardage at 41.0 (9th nationally among qualifying punters), had zero touchbacks (one of only two qualifying punters), 21 punts downed inside the 20, allowed only 67 return yards and 15 returns on 64 punts (third best return rate in FBS), and didn't allow a return of longer than 9 yards all year. Those numbers are mind boggling for a freshman.

He's going to be a hell of a player for us for the next three years

Thanks for making this point. I think often when fans don't see big booming punts they think the punter isn't doing his job. Net Punting is what matters and UC was great as a unit with their punting this year... Glad to see James Smith getting credit for this and excited for the rest of his career. Hopefully he won't punt as often going forward.

It really boggled my mind how many people thought the Punter was bad. The UC kick/punt coverage teams were better than they had been in a long time, and Smith got the accolades for his play.

To be honest I think a lot of casual fans conflate the punter and the placekicker. Many assume they are the same guy.

Edit: I cannot believe UC commit Bacevich doesn't make any of the all state teams.

Just another reminder that the Mr. Football in Ohio is a Quarterback with 4,000 total yards and 50 TDs who is going to UVA on a friggin wrestling scholarship...
