Question re bowl $$$$ payouts
With the exception of the NYD access bowl, aren't all the other bowl payouts pooled and split?

RE: Question re bowl $$$$ payouts
If the bowl has a high enough payout to cover the schools expenses then yes the remainder is split, however I believe the school going to the bowl gets an amount to cover their costs first and bowls like the frisco bowl likely don't pay much more than that.

And I'm pretty sure this is true for access bowl too. I don't think UH got the total sum of the peach bowl when we went

The access bowl gets split. The participating team gets expenses paid due to the NY6 agreement with P6 and G4, IIRC.

RE: Question re bowl $$$$ payouts
NY6 bowl teams get about 2.5 million to cover costs separate from the bowl payout. The bowl payout is split across the conference.
Back when ucf got into the last BCS bowl against Baylor, there was no additional funds allocated for the cost of the team to travel. Everyone in the conference received the same BCS payout, but UCF had additional expenses on top of it, so they only netted 3/4's of what the rest of us did for their bowl appearance. Its kind of been a theme of theirs since joining the conference.

So if youre 5-7 in a conference full of playoff and access team in theory you'd net more than the team who won their way in?

Expenses going may have been greater than conference stipend for expenses...but then they got their share of the rest of that payout...plus their share of the OTHER payouts (minus probably smaller expenses stipendds to THOSE teams).
And then these days, we each get our share of the other $20 million or so that is the AAC's piece of the CFP pie.
Long read, but might help avoid knee jerk reactions and sob stories:

I seem to recall they made an assload on marketing from that win, so it ended up being alright for them.
