I’ll let you know after Saturday’s game, but at the end of the day I care a lot more about wins and losses than brand of basketball.
I agree, but not sure how 4-5 games into season 2 with a brand new roster is going to show you where we are this year.

I was saying I’ll see them for the first time Sat so I’ll judge whether it’s a better brand of basketball and if so, I’ll aknowledge it.

So if you don't think it is, does that mean I'm wrong?

RE: George Mason @ JMU hoops
Here are some quick thoughts about 24 hours later:
1. To me, both teams play a nearly identical style or so it seemed. I thought that JMU was the superior team, save for that disastrous ending.
2. While Paulson is generally considered a good coach, he hardly cuts a dashing figure on the sideline and is overly demonstrative (and I would say unbecoming of a head coach with his overt protestations at times).
3. Mosley is one of the best offensive players I've seen at JMU....this is clearly his team.
4. McLean continues to try to do too much and hurts the team in the final analysis. He's a complementary player, not a lead one, in my humble opinion. Take away the two fouls at the end and he was still awful. Shot 2 for 12 with 5 turnovers. Let other guys take some of his shots.
5. Phillips was at an advantage last night, but he's still shown some very nice growth over the course of the season.
6. Lewis seems to be the most advanced of the freshman. Wilson is not in optimal shape and until he is, I don't seem him contributing much. Jacobs seems to have disappeared of late and it could be due to his various injuries...I'm still high on him, though. Banks needs to work on his shooting, as does Jones. Lewis, Banks and Jacobs, though, have shown best in the early going from that class.
7. Seems like rotation is being tightened down to players with most experience.
8. Team is improving and I hope they start to see some results. Last night really hurt, putting them at 2-6 instead of 3-5 in the early going.
9. That local product Kier did not impress me....I don't think JMU missed on him if last night was any indication.

He carries himself like a heftier Pete Gillen. Kind of your typical disheveled old school coach.

I think Kier had an off night- was probably a little keyed up being in front of his family and friends but also Lewis did a nice job on him. Mosely played good defense last night as well.
I agree with you on McLean- I still think he's a useful player for this team and odds are that Mosely and or Lewis's production may be impacted and they may turn the ball over more if they had to handle it more. It's a shame they couldn't land Wheeler as a true PG this off season- coupled with the other recruits that would have been a real coupe for Rowe.
Even with McLean's 5 turnovers the team only had 10 for the game as compared with 20 assists and they should have had more assists if some of the open shots went down. That's a winning ratio and I can't remember the last time JMU had that many assists and they have been hovering around 10 turnovers per game which is good.
Phillips play last night made such a difference- the offense flows so much better inside out especially when he forces a double team. When Dalembert was at his best he had a similar effect but I think Phillips is taller and stands more upright/keeps the ball higher to be able to pass out of the double team. He also shows some versatility- the spin move under the basket away from the double team for the basket and 1 was impressive. He sometimes gets stuffed by the basket but he's a good free throw shooter and has better hands that YoYo did.

Paulson looks like someone you might see sitting at the corner bar, a regular in fact. Doesn't look sophisticated or someone that leads a college program that not all that long ago went to a Final Four. He also wants to win so badly that he overdoes it on the sidelines. He was apoplectic when Phillips put JMU up 4 with about 26 or 27 seconds to play. I promise you that he was stunned to win that game.

We will at some point have to have our bigs (other than Phillips) show some offensive capability. There were virtually no mid range or short jumpers. Layups, 3 pointers and dunks.
PS. One of the things I loved about Phillips last night was that he slammed it home when possible. Too many other guys use the glass and miss.

I am not a fan of the new pace and space trends in basketball unless you have extraordinary shooters (ala Curry, Thompson, Durant). Seems the game is trending in that direction and it’s fun to watch when played well, but can be brutal if teams are shooting poorly.
The NBA is heading in this direction fast and with the exception of a few teams, it’s unwatchable.

This is how basketball is played now- high percentage 2 point shots (i.e. layups dunks and drives) and 3 point shots (lower percentage but with the extra point more valuable). Don't see many effective mid range players or even high block post players anymore.

Edsell. One of the kings of screwing JMU over.
I believe he was the one responsible for giving ODU the game during a CAA tournament game in the late 90s. He was so bad he had a reputation with us and he knew it.
I know there's gotta be someone else here that can back me up on this claim.
I think that was Larry Rose wasn't it?
Overall, I'm still so pissed about that game but optimistic about this team and the future. Phillips was ridiculous against Mason, and huge down the stretch in beating App State too. He's quickly becoming a favorite for me, but picking a favorite on this team is hard as hell in a good way. Definitely already a fun team to watch, hopefully keep moving in the right direction.

Oh, I realize that. Just hadn't noticed that trend as much here.-probably due to our group of imports and Euros we've recently had. That's one of the reasons I can't stand the NBA.
