RE: UC marching band
Still no money for whoever took over for my daughter manually altering and fixing 200+ uniforms every year. Man did she hate that job, but no one else knew how to do it.
Of the $42,100 requested by the band:
• $25,000 will go to rights to share audio and video of performances. The band will then be able to nationally distribute their work, enabling the university to “leverage it’s great performances of varied and popular music as a recruitment and marketing opportunity,” according to the memo.
• $15,000 will go to copyrights and arrangements for new music. Without funding for new music, the Bearcat Bands are severely limited in their ability to play fresh and varied new music. This $15,000 will “elevate [the band’s] ability to entertain the university community,” according to the memo.
• $2,100 will cover paying student workers to reduce band student labor. These students will provide support for the band. “What that labor consists of is cleaning band facilities, hauling equipment, cleaning after performances, transporting and lugging goods while they are traveling with different athletic teams,”

RE: UC marching band
Bruce, I'm thinking (hoping) that the addition of these new funds will allow pre-existing funding to be reallocated to things like uniform repair. That would be great.
Regardless, an extra $42,100 per year is a tremendous boost that will really help with recruiting and playing more popular music. Anyone with an idea of the band's current annual funding (or lack thereof) will recognize how huge of an increase that would be. Kudos to everyone involved!

It's a win for now, but honestly, it isn't anywhere near enough. Knowing what I hear now, the amount TUCBIDG gets every year vs those of our peers in this conference is kinda insane.

RE: UC marching band
I was very active, and very close with Frenz for a number of years during my time at UC.. Some of the issues of the piped in music also came from some in the athletic department not feeling the band played what they wanted...
They wanted small snippets of pop tunes etc.. but wouldn't give Frenz the budget to get access to said snippets. So it was either red and black, give a beer, or cheer cincy short and that's about it..
I also came from a very competitive band(Mason) and can promise you that dozens of my high school classmates walked away from the UC band because of some of the constraints they felt were holding the band back. I get it that not everyone holds the band in as high of importance as others, but really he was playing 5 card poker with a 2, 5, 9, and jack all different suits in his hand everywhere he went.. A pair was about the best he could get out of the table scrapings he was trying to scrape a band together with. There is a reason the service organizations are/were such an integral part of that organization. They maintain uniforms every year, buy instruments/repair instruments/buy podiums etc.. all things every major program outside of UC get paid for by the University.. There were many years that the service org's had bigger budgets(10's of thousands of dollars) from their fundraising than Terry and the Band Council had COMBINED to support the band.
Hell the kids still have to pay a band dues(was always under $100) fee ON TOP of their tuition to be in the band.. at least they did when I left 8 years ago..
I for one disagreed with the music he played and thought we should be more show band, than competition style, but I will never fault the man for his choices. I know he was handcuffed and was given $$ on a scale no one outside of the organization appreciates fully.

"Give a Beer"... Sounds like a good song to me!
On a serious note (pun intended), good insights. Dr. Frenz did a good job with what he had, and I think most of us understand that. Sometimes a new director can help open new doors that had been closed before. Hopefully Dr. Nichter can keep things moving in the right direction.

I believe my daughter actually bought her own sewing machine so that they didn't have to fit the band uniforms entirely by hand. And, yes, they still have to pay band dues each year.
