Pumping $25m into Legion Field is a waste of money that the city can't afford to piss away.
Some ideas seem innocent but trace the idea to it's source and you won't be surprised.

He is one of the ones in on it. Pumping this kind of money into a 90 year old stadium in a old/run down neighborhood makes very little sense.

Hopefully this is noisy faction that doesn't have staying power, otherwise we're in trouble.

I have my doubts .....but we'll see. In other words why in the ham & cheese would this be a viable option after years of the park & rec board saying the gray lady is falling apart. If the city was going go this route, it would have been done years ago.....why now????????????????????????????????????????????

Wrong. Everyone is at the table except birmingham. He is playing a game and he better hope it doesn’t backfire on him.

While it may be that the citizens elected someone as Mayor who "is not very smart", the decisions on spending city funds lies with the City Council, not the Mayor. He can suggest and guide, but he can't spend a dime. What has the new Council President had to say about a stadium? There are 9 Council members and several are newly elected. Has anyone asked them? In 1962 the voters chose the "Weak Mayor - strong Council" form of government to replace the City Commission. That is what B'ham still has.

RE: Woodfin's Latest Comments on the Stadium
The question is, "Are the proposed renovations to the Legion Field area an effort to upgrade the community around Legion field with the expectation that much of its activity will be moving to a new stadium downtown?". There is a scenario whereby the new stadium gets approved and a revitalization of the area surrounding Legion Field gets done with new mixed-income development(the current low-income community is scheduled for demolition and replacement w/fewer units). Currently, the new stadium downtown does not meet the needs of the Alabama A&M/Alabame State game in terms of the free-flowing atmosphere that currently exists at Legion Field(the attendance issue could be ovecome by increasing ticket prices, that would, of course, increase those outside of the stadium during the game). Some may even prefer the Legend Field area for the game. Also, what's the view of the fast-sinking influence of ESPN of the Birmingham Bowl?

I'm all for the city revitalizing that area, but it sounds like this $25M is intended to spent directly on the stadium in hopes of keeping Legion Field alive as the only stadium.

The city should build a new stadium, demolish Legion Field, and turn the space into a really nice park with some new housing.

Carole Smitherman was the proponent of putting a dome over Legion field some years ago. Has she returned with a 25 million dollar upgrade ??

The only thing standing in UABs way is the deal for the new stadium downtown. After the long court battle some how we now have competing ideas about what to do concerning a new stadium downtown versus putting more money into legion field. The latter idea was no where to be found until the downtown stadium became a real distinct possibility. If the city pour millions into legion field gets what happens for the project slated for downtown.....nothing. This doesn't smell right...at least not to me.

By itself, B'ham can't build a major project like ether of the proposed replacements for Legion Field. No city can at today's costs of construction. It will take a combined effort by several funding sources to build any such new facility. When that new facility is "on line" and open for business, Legion Field can then be demolished if that is deemed the best choice. Until that time, it is the only large game (site) in town so the city must keep it useable and upkeep on any old building is expensive.

Many newer stadiums have come and gone in the last few decades. The Kingdome, the GA Dome, the Metrodome, Three Rivers Stadium, Cowboy's stadium, Yankee Stadium to name a few. They have all been replaced by very expensive new, usually larger facilities often built by combined municipal and private funding - usually for naming rights. The BJCC stadium would be bucking this trend by replacing a larger facility with one less than 70% of the older facility's capacity.

It's been stated many times that Jeffco, UAB, and the corporate community are all on board. The exact terms of what each is contributing aren't going to be laid out here on Blazertalk. But just know each of those entities is committed to the project ($$$) and everyone is just waiting on the city. Literally no one is asking the city of birmingham to pay for this alone.

The tax benefit for the city in itself would justify the new stadium.

If a Jeffco Commissioner can specifically say what B'ham should pay, why can't he be specific about what the county will contribute?

Tell me, how many contract negotiations of any sort does the public get to read the negotiating positions on before the deal is finalized?

Why would you expect this one to be completely public? That's not how this works.

RE: Woodfin's Latest Comments on the Stadium
Latest I'm hearing is that the $25m over 5 years to renovate Legion Field is separate from dealings with the new stadium. If so, this creates a nicer, more viable Legion Field for the immediate future AND a smaller, state-of-the-art stadium at Uptown. The two stadiums would be two separate budgets, with the Birmingham City Parks & Rec Board funding & operating Legion Field and the BJCC operating the publicly/privately funded stadium at Uptown.

This might be the win-win we were looking for.

Outside of high school games & possibly the Magic City Classic nothing would be held at Legion Field if there was a new stadium at the BJCC>
