Do you remember when....
We used to hope for a Bowl invite, now we expect it?

My, how have times changed.

In all fairness, a bowl doesn’t mean much anymore...there are twice as many and all you need is a winning record. Bowl games should be a reward for an excellent season, not above average ones

RE: Do you remember when....
As of now, there will be 128 Football Bowl Subdivision teams for 78 bowl slots in 2015, meaning 61 percent of the FBS will be in the postseason. In recent years, there was 120 FBS teams for 70 bowl slots (58 percent of FBS in the postseason).

By 2015, college football's postseason more than doubled in 20 years. There were 18 bowls in 1995 and there will be 40 in 2017-18. Significantly increasing the postseason has occurred throughout college football history.

The number of bowl games increased from six to 11 between 1955 and 1975. Then they went from 11 to 18 from 1975 to 1995. During the 16-year Bowl Championship Series era, the amount of bowls increased from 20 to 35.

...and we also started winning during the increase, and it rained glorious bowl games on Dekalb year after year. I'd like to see a number in the middle, where maybe 35-40% of teams go bowling, where 7-5 is the minimum win requirement, and the bowl games removed are from across the board, not just from the G5 affiliations.

That'd be a sensible world. Funny how "too many bowl games" became a thing once our middling teams got the chances middling P5 teams had for years.

Like so much else in life and sports its all about generating more revenue and brand awareness

Remember when ncaa hoops was 32 teams, then 64 , then 64 plus play in games?

I'd rather have too many bowls over not enough. 2003 was a travesty of justice and shouldn't be repeated. 2005 as well. I don't get why so many people are against the extra games. If you love football then more games are great. Matchups that you'll never see otherwise. It's a fun atmosphere in places most of us wouldn't go to otherwise. More chances to cheer on your team. Plus less games means that more P5 schools get the spots over us in at large situations. Remember Northwestern in 2003? I believe the G5 conference made a sensible move to create their own bowls to ensure deserving teams don't get screwed. If you want less bowls but still expect inclusion, you should start lobbying for a G5 playoff which will mean something. Right now there will be a few G5 teams that get to play a P5 team as a last resort. Then there's the access bowl which won't favor us over teams from American or MWC. The system isn't perfect but we wouldn't be in consideration in other years.

College football is the only "major" sport with no real post season outside of that 1 conference championship game. The other sports have playoff formats where about 33%-53% of the teams make the post season. So you can be .500 in the NHL or NBA and still make the post season. It is a few too many bowls, but all the leagues have expanded the post season to reward teams for decent years(but really just to make money)

The "bowl" season is nothing more than exhibition games between mostly average teams to give ESPN programming.

It’s also a chance for football players to play the game they love, be rewarded for a winning season, go to a city they may otherwise never be able to go to, practice with their team for a few more weeks, possibly win a trophy playing a team they otherwise may never play.

and had on rosters genuine impact difference makers like turner, diehm, wolfe, harnish., lynch, golladay ...what other contemporary Huskies belong to the list --- excluding oldies like Bork and the Cowboy?

maybe when his career ends add Sutton Smith - he makes other teammates better.. complaining about too much football and too many bowl games is like complaining about too much sex.

There are also probably 300 teams now trying to get into the big dance. I bet that number has went up close to 50% in just a few decades.

Football has gone from from around probably 100 to 130 or so. And yet the # bowls has doubled. When they have to let teams under .500 that's an issue. All tv.

It'll be nice when the sentiment eventually becomes:

"We used to expect to lose bowl games, now we expect to win."
