They were calling a different game at both ends of the court. Cacok should have had about 15 and 1's. There were at least 6 over the back on defensive rebounds that went uncalled. The foul count stayed doubled against us for the most part of the game. So if you were to take the factor of the bad refs out of the game, we would have won by 10 easy.
I say all of this with a little apprehension because I also always think that we shouldn't leave it up to the refs to be the deciding factor. But if you did happen to be at the game, you have to agree with me that the fouls were terribly lopsided.
And to 82hawk......don't throw in the towel this early. We need everyone's support and we can't be fair weather fans. They will figure this all out by conference start. That is really all that matters.
Ehhhh, I watched the entire thing. The strip at the end which allowed them to tie it was questionable. I really didn't have a problem with the refs, and you have a pretty good view on an HD broadcast. We can't make excuses. There were a number of coaching adjustments that could have been made, and were not. IMO, Thatt cost us the game. Example, We switch to Zone(which was a nice coaching adjustment), we make a nice run get the lead and then we switch back to man where we can't stop an elderly woman off the dribble. Why?

Glad I wasn't able to watch or listen to this one. UNCW Basketball losing to ECU is the thing I hate the worst across any and all sports I watch or follow. And losing in the manner you guys described? Really, really sucks.

I get that I lean "sunshine squad", and sometimes rightfully get called out for that, but even I have nothing good to say today. Patience will thin if this is the kind of play we get continuously. If we're going to try to improve our defensive efficiency and play half court D, we have to simply do it. It shouldn't matter how UNC plays ball, whatever style we opt to use, the defense has to be there. At this level, in the CAA, you can't win this 1-bid league without tough, 40-minutes-of-hell defense every single game.

Tough loss but it's a really hard place for UNCW to win and couple that with the Lebo deal makes it a really emotional game for them. Defense is a concern but it was last year as well but UNCW just out scored people and the talent is not there right now. I differ in that I think it is all about recruiting players that fit what you do,at least 80% of winning is recruiting talent. I am not flipping out on the coaching staff in the first quarter of the first season.

RE: Thursday @ ECU
You have to say we have good talent

Cacock
Talley
Fornes
Taylor
Richmond
Estime
Gary
Bryan (much improved)

If foul trouble comes up play Powell

No one else on the roster should even see the floor. We can be good but gonna have to play Zone D. We are getting slughtered in man.

Kalina actually looked ok in his few minutes yesterday. Tough to write off a guy that is 7 feet that looks like he can actually contribute.

The Roy Williams that I see in CB is with his bench. Roy notoriously plays a deep bench, especially early in the season and he gets it from Coach Smith. There are benefits to doing this and it takes a while to get used to. There are those moments when you’re wondering why in the hell he’s playing a certain rotation and losing a lead or a deficit is increasing. Hopefully, we enter late February and early March with battle-tested guys that we can count on. Even with a tightened rotation, foul trouble and injuries happen. I’m less concerned with the rotations than I am the defense. If we can’t keep guards from penetrating, we’re going to continue to struggle. ECU was certainly playing inspired after Lebo resigned, but there’s really no excuse for allowing a bad team to be that efficient offensively. That has to be corrected.

Like I said last night, six games in isn’t enough to evaluate a coach. He deserves more. Keatts took a team that went on to win 25 games into Minges and lost by six. This sucks, but it’s not a definitive indication of the direction of the program.

This isn't a 25 win team, and there are plenty of other concerns, not just last night unfortunately. It's not like this was just a random bad game. Agree wityh you 100% on the D it's pathetic. Honestly no other word for it

But when we jumped out to a 10-0 lead, we had the opportunity to drop the hammer and take emotion out of it.

Amazingly, I agree with the rest of your post. It's a weird/sad day when Mullet is among the most optimistic.

I'm definitely patient when it comes to rotations and trying different personnel. That part doesn't bother me at all, because it shows there's a "bigger picture" in mind for how this season will play out. If he had already reduced things to where he's only playing 8-9, it would mean he's placing a heavy focus on "winning now" and not the long play. So I don't mind at all seeing 10-11 guys playing early in the season.

But yes, the defense is something that shouldn't be impacted much at all by the rotations. The effort, intensity, and communication needs to be solid no matter who is on the court. Whatever we need to do to get there needs to happen immediately. Even playing at a fast pace, allowing 80+ ppg every night just is not sustainable in the CAA, both in the short term and long term.

Coach McGrath needs to find a way to buck the trend of a lot of coaches off the Roy Williams coaching tree. Coach Shaver's Tribe teams still give up a lot of points long into his tenure there, and it's something they've just had to kind of "live with", because it's a tough place to recruit. But here, we don't have a lot of those issues, and need to see Coach McGrath adapt the "Carolina style" to winning basketball here. He needs time to do this, but the hope is we start seeing little steps in progress even here in his 1st year. It would be tough to accept that our team would stubbornly stick to a style that hasn't proven to work great at this level. We have to "think differently" with both style and recruitment philosophy.

Agree with you 100%. It's easy to get away with not having a great focus on D at the level of a UNC because they have the horses that are athletic enough to offset any lack of effort on D. At this level, it needs to be a focus. Generally speaking, at this level we don't have players you can just roll the ball out, let play and expect good results. He needs to adapt, and quick!
