Nooooo!!! The last thing the North Texas defense wants is to play another option team.

The option would be great for y'all. Guaranteed winning seasons. His son is waiting on a heart transplant. I wonder if he would be willing to move the family from Annapolis under those circumstances?

Houston has one of the best cardiac centers in the world. Dr Debakey and Dr Cooley (both dead now) working in the Houston Medical Center were the inventors of the heart/lung machines and pioneered the heart transplant operation in the 1960's. A child probably couldnt get much better care than what he can find in the Houston Medical Center, which is actually only a few miles from the Rice campus.

Gong to the triple option is an interesting idea. It can be incredibly effective, especially if you are the only team in the league running it.

UTEP needs a football coach and their new AD came from The Citadel, which ran the triple option. So maybe that's also an, ahem, option for them.

dud has been an OC for about 10 years and has coached at 6 different Universities during that time. Rice can do better...than hire this Todd Graham wannabe... jmo.

I think some of it may have been additional FBS competition in Texas. UTSA and Texas State both entered the FBS arena about the same time Rice seemed to start trending the wrong way. I have to say, I really like the idea of Rice hiring the Navy OC as thier new HC. Being the only triple option team in CUSA would be a big advantage. Additionally, there are a TON of parallels between recruiting at Navy and recruiting at Rice. They are both after a very similar athlete profile. I could see an academy OC being very successful there. Plus, they would be the only FBS team running that offense in Texas. Recruiting a different kind of offensive lineman than everyone else just might work for them.

That's one of the main reasons USM fans will say caused the fall for us. Back in the mid to late 90s and early 2000s USM was one of the few non P5 programs in the area and we got just about any player turned away by SEC programs. But now 15-20 years later we've got UAB, Troy, South Alabama, UCF, USF, and Georgia St to name a few. At the same time (and as mentioned in post i quoted) you've got additional Texas schools such as UTSA and Texas St to compete against.

I agree. I think this even effects the depth of P5 teams... notice that Florida, Florida Sate, and Miami don't dominate year in and year out anymore... USF, UCF, FAU and FIU steal some of their depth...(along with schools like Louisville that recruit the hell our of Florida. I am not saying we steal in Blue Chippers... but I think we get some guys that could add to the depth of the Big 3...

Plus, back then--- LaTech had a winning program, but they played half thier games way out west in the WAC. Not to mention Miss St and Ole Miss both sucked.. so if you were from that area, didnt get a offer from a SEC heavy weight, and you wanted to stay in the area--the only place to play local FBS football and actually win games was S Miss.

Actually, the Texas Medical Center is just across a couple of streets (Main and Fannin) from campus: https://goo.gl/maps/9KraWgTHaTy

didn't Ken Hatfield run the option at Rice? He had some winning seasons as I remember it...

Yes he did, and had quite a bit of success with it including one SWC title and three really good years in the WAC contending for the title. We beat top-25 teams each of those years, but also had one (or more) close loss(es) each year that kept us out of the postseason.

When it was clicking we could roll 3 yards each down, convert multiple 4th&shorts per drive, and just wear folks down.

In the last three or so years of Hatfield's term, the Rice fanbase got very upset with the option offense. It was called predictable, boring, and outmoded, and they longed for a more modern offense. It seems odd now that some want a return to those days of yesteryear.

What are the latest rumors for the new Rice coach? Any names being leaked as having interviewed?

Dan Wolken from USA Today hearing South Carolina OC Kurt Roper's name a lot. Not that enthused, given that it seems majority of Gamecocks' fans want him gone (with Muschamp supposedly helping him try to find another job instead of firing him).

We’ll probably interview both of Stanford’s coordinators after tonight’s PAC champ game. Lots of speculation on lots of names but nothing too substantive. I think this is pretty wide open and not a whole lot of news this week.

I will also mention that there’s two Super Bowl champion HCs who have ties to the program, but I am not expecting a Kubiak or Gruden to take the reins.
