Way too many 2 point jumpers.

I could see Hueitt and Haynes being rotated offense for defense at end of games. Put BJ at the 4. Caver/Green in game as well

Haynes is one of ODU's better defenders. He wouldn't be in an "offense for defense" substitution discussion as he would already be in the game.

As someone noted earlier, Green has not shown the ability to hit important, end of game free throws yet. Might come at some point this season, but he hasn't yet.

Caver is still too off and on with his free throw shooting. Some games he is good, and the next one he is bad with his free throw shooting. Before he is to be called a good point guard he needs to become consistently in the good category as far as shooting free throws is concerned. Free throw shooting goes with the point guard position much like assists does. Have to knock them down if the ball is going to be in your hands at the end of the game while nursing a small lead.

Edit: Did I read it wrong and misinterpret what you meant? Are you saying that you would substitute Hueitt in for Haynes (instead of both of them coming in together for offense)? If so, isn't Haynes doing well from the line? I remember him making 2 for 2 against W&M when most everyone else was awful.

The end of game offense (assuming a team will foul) could be:

Caver
Green or Haynes
Huiett (assuming he's a good free throw shooter)
BJ
Porter

The end of game defense could be:

Caver
Green
Haynes
Stith(s) or Carver
Porter

Green only has 19 free throws so I'm assuming he's actually a good free throw shooter. Randy isn't a terrible free throw shooter either, but I think Green is a better ball handler (and maybe even decision maker at this point) No issue with Haynes is, but I could see reasoning (assuming Green can hit FTs; can't judge in games yet) for an offensive lineup of Caver, Green, Hueitt, Stith, Porter.

BJ has only taken 9 free throws. We are at least 10 games away from even judging what we have in terms of free throws.

Well we do enough to say that BJ is a good FT shooter, Brandan is a poor FT shooter, and Caver and Porter could go either way depending on the day. Only true unknowns that get significant minutes are Green, Carver and Haynes.

RE: MBB -- Maryland Eastern Shore
You can see with your eyes who is a good FT shooter and who isn't, since the sample size for the season is small. You can extend the sample to previous years, can't you? The shot doesn't change.

Porter's new FT shot had me cringing when I first saw it but it appears to work for him. He shoots it sky high and feels like a low percentage shot, but it was going in very nicely last night.

Carver's FT shooting motion was horrendous. He holds the ball up over his head then just flicks his wrist to shoot. The spin is kind of funky. Just not a good look.

I feel like Ahmad's struggles are all mental right now. Easy for me to say. But we all know he has the ability and we all know he is a good FT shooter based on his history.

I got the feeling that JJ was waiting to see him do that. JJ also complimented Vassor saying he always plays his butt off in practice and he was so happy to see him hit those three shots almost right in a row. Also said that the bench warmers shouldn't think of it being garbage time...they need to play as if the game was still up for grabs. Except for allowing some treys when the "kids" came in JJ was very pleased. He also said he will remind the starters that as team players they need to play they're hearts out so the "kids" can get more game time.

Hueitt is going to have to be tough. After he made a couple, UMES was trying to destroy him by running his man off really physical picks. At least three times, the UMES bigs made sure to give him a little extra shot with their shoulders as he was trying to get through.

I spotted at least one of those. But, to his credit, he bounced back up pretty quickly.

The only other times that I noticed him get tangled up with the pick I didn't see any extra shoulder from the defender. It instead looked more to me like he was just all arms and legs trying to get around a bigger player.

Based upon current performance for this season, along with the intangible of experience with being in a late game situation, I would have to go with -

Caver - mainly for ball handling, and with the hope that he makes the foul shots if fouled. He will if he is having an 'on' day vice an 'off' one.

BJ - best foul shooter on the team until someone surpasses him.

Haynes - is doing better at the line than most of the others that have more than just a couple of attempts and his shot attempts look good from the line. Thus far to me him and BJ have the best looking free throw shots.

After that it is like rolling the dice. I suspect that Hueitt is a good free throw shooter, but haven't seen him shoot any so I can't form an opinion yet. Same goes for a few of the others that haven't played much yet this season. Green hasn't impressed me with his foul shooting thus far. Some of his misses have not been close misses.

Of the big men - Porter, Brandan, Carver, and Vassor ... I would not be the least bit surprised if Vassor wasn't the most likely to step up to the line and make an important free throw, at least at this point of the season,

We saw some FTs from both teams miss everything. I've now started yelling 'Nothing but Net' when that happens. I would love to start chanting that after any airballs FTs or 3 pointers......
