ESPN link

So, UT and Schiano's people signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Word got out, and there was a total meltdown of VFL Nation. I'm not sure myself what part Schiano's past at Penn State played (it looks like he might have been named in the McQueary deposition, I'm not sure) and what part his past at Rutgers played--he was .500 in his tenure at Rutgers, and playing Florida and Georgia is a bit tougher than playing Syracuse and Pitt every year.

Greg Schiano should give up coaching football and go sell used cars or something.

It's pretty clear he'll never sit in the big chair again.

Don't dream, it's over, Greg.

Yeah, you can suck and if you hang around long enough, eventually someone will give you a shot.

Or you can be a complete garbage fire of a human being, and people will overlook that if you win.

But you can't do both.

How does he suck? He completely turned Rutgers around going to 7 bowl games in his last 8 years. Yes the overall record doesn't look good because they stunk his first 3 years before he got his players in.

Seriously, this is just dumb. He's not the first college coach to completely fail at the NFL level cough Saban cough.

you take those 1st 3 years out and he was still only 26-29 in conference play.

And this probably didn't have much to do with his on field stuff quite frankly.

https://nesn.com/2017/11/bill-belichick-...ead-coach/

Quote:"I would say the most impressive thing for me is the way that our players, which we’ve had a lot of Rutgers players come through here, the loyalty and the I would say love of the program, the college program that they were in at Rutgers when he was there, how they maintained that for years and years after they had left. Not taking anything away from any other school, but I would just say that it’s extremely strong. I think the relationship that he has with his kids, with his players and how well prepared his players are to come into this league is exceptional. I didn’t know that, but it’s good for him. He’s a great coach. I’m sure he’ll be a great head coach. Again, he’s done an awful lot. He’s helped me in a lot of different ways and I have a lot of respect for him.”

How the hell is all of the Penn State stuff going to hurt Schiano more than anyone else involved? (Well more than everyone excluding Sandusky)

Where were all these high and mighty UT fans when the school hired Bruce Pearl? Or what about the sexual assault violations involving student-athletes last year?

This is not about Sandusky or Penn State. This is about Tennessee fans screaming and shouting hiding behind a curtain of supposed higher moral authority because they didn't get Gruden and couldn't get Mullen.

This isn’t a good look for a program hoping to lure in a big name.

Volnation is in hilarious meltdown right now. Some sane posters are pointing out that their dumpster fire has gone nuclear by the perception that UT fans/boosters/legislators will revolt unless the hire is a tier1 home-run... but no top coaches will want to go there because of that reason. Posters calling for the AD's head as well, which will only complicate the search. Lots of bickering and infighting. It's spectacular.

Apparently someone testified that someone else told them that Schiano as a 22 year old assistant may have seen something and didn't say something.

That is a pretty thin reed to to hold onto when trashing someone's reputation and future career prospects with a Twitter torch and pitchfork mob.

Schiano doesn't have the hardware to convince people to overlook the accusation that he saw Sandusky rape a boy and walked away.

If Rutgers beats (checking wikipedia) WEst Virginia in 2006 and wins the Orange Bowl, he's probably being introduced at UT's coach right now.

Shiano is not the flashiest name out there; but he is a well-seasoned coach who would quickly bring a fractured program under control and instill a re-focused attitude among the players. That may not necessarily mean big-time wins at the get-go. With anyone that assumes that job, some patience is warranted. Dissatisfied fans and meddling boosters need to get behind whomever undertakes the task.

Shiano has a good reputation as a recruiter, and has good connections in the mid-Atlantic, NE, and Ohio.

Mark Dominik, former GM at Tampa Bay, who hired Schiano, via Twitter:

"We spent hours & hours interviewing & background checks on Greg Schiano. Yes we didn’t win. Fact-he’s honest, awesome father/husband, & an excellent football coach. This shouldn’t be whether YOU think you like him or not, you don’t even know him. #Meyer #Belichick ask them."
