RE: Coaching Candidates
Im not sure how to feel about Freeman being considered. He is 31 years old and has 7 years of coaching experience with most of that being a position coach. With his age he could probably relate to the players and if he wins he will be gone. He would be youngest FBS coach by 3 years.

It also seems hard to get a good read on Schafer since he switches schools almost every year.

Shafer is the best DC we (WMU) have had in 20 years.

Was also instrumental in NIU's rise to top of MAC including beating Alabama and Maryland - both ranked in Top 20 at the time - in same season before coming to Kalamazoo.

He only lasted one year at Michigan because Rodriguez made him scapegoat for his horrible first season in Ann Arbor.

Here's at least one denial of interest, although the language would allow him room to maneuver.

RE: Coaching Candidates
Bob Nielson must have gotten "cold feet" or leveraged a healthy pay raise and resourcesfrom USD.

The lack of media interest in our programs is equal parts stunning, sad and alarming.

I wish there was more coverage as well but I am also glad we aren't Tennessee. All of their public rejections are far worse than near silence.

All of them look good to me, relative to what we have had lately.

I really hope they are not considering Marcus Freeman, he is a pup in the game...what we don't need is another unexperienced coach...We need to focus on someone with HC experience that can build a team from nothing...another reason why I don't believe Freeman will come because he was here with Hazell and he knows first hand how the AD is...Hazell wanted updates to the facilities (the indoor field-house etc.) didn't happen...we can't compete with other MAC teams facilities...AD needs to continue to focus on D2 or D3 coaches that would triple their salary and are crazy enough to say "what do I have to loose...$400K, compared to $80K? I would go up...

I'm not in favor of hiring someone in Freeman's position either but I expect that's what we'll do. The article about Okla St's OC being a candidate is laughable unless we can pony up closer to $1 million a year.

Will Healy (HC at Austin Peay) is a strong candidate at South Alabama.

This article just came out, and what great timing as the coaching carousel continues to spin: http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries.../assistant

RE: Coaching Candidates
I've been told we are in no urgent hurry to make a hire as we don't need to follow the timeline of the power 5 schools. Could we be dragging our feet to have a serious discussion with Vince Kehres at Mount Union.

Don't automatically assume he'll follow the same path as his father. Their season will end either this Saturday or next Saturday.

Okie St OC is making 600k according to that article. So he might be willing to take a slight pay cut or we might do the unthinkable and match his current pay.

I would predict no and no.
