Rice wins! 70-59. Closed the game on 23-7 run. Sloppy game, but encouraging the way we finished this one....and without Cashaw. Mency (11) and Lapray (10) with career highs off the boads (and Osborne had 7 in just 17 minutes).

Squeaking by NAIA teams with players that looked like they walked in off the street and put on Rice jerseys five minutes before tipoff... that's what I mean by not taking games seriously.

I just got back from a week at St. Louis so I missed the game. If I was there I might have a Cashaw update. Hopefully it's just a case of them holding him out like in the exhibition.

I wouldn't worry too much about the score. We always struggle against St. Thomas (outside of last year). We only beat them by 13 two years ago when we had 12 wins.

Now if Cashaw is out for an extended period of time, that might be a problem.

Good for Lester. Maybe if he gets more PT, Hunter won't have to play the point.

Alabama plays a chunk of the second half with only 3 players after the whole bench gets ejected.

Cashaw has a problem with his right shoulder. He said it wasn't too bad and he should be ready by Monday. I was really impressed with Miles Lester tonight. He played like a veteran. So many of our players are playing soft, afraid to take a shot or going haphazardly on a layup or grabbing a rebound. Miles looked in charge both ends. That's the way St. Thomas played, driving to the hole, moving the ball and getting open 3s.

Good overview Bob. With the exception of Myles, AJ, and for a few minutes Myers the team played as you described. Myles is a gym rat and hopefully he will produce like another Kansas walk on we had, Adam Peakes.

May or may not be the same game as you are recalling, but it definitely happened in a game against Texas freshmen at old Gregory Gym in 1970. I remember because I got talked into keeping the book. Varsity played first, on TV, and very few people stayed for the second game. I'm working the scorer's table with the great (and I mean that very seriously as a compliment) Bill Little, who was then assistant SID at Texas. There were something like 62 fouls called on both teams combined (that's like 15 per half per team, or enough to foul out 12 guys, and that's about what happened). Texas center BG Brosterhaus (who was killed several years later by walking into a low hanging power line after a storm, it was dark and he was following others who had safety walked under it because they weren't 6-10) started. got 3 fouls in the first 2 minutes, sat the rest of the half, picked up #4 on the tip-off to start the second half (still had those until 1981), and before they could get a sub in, #5 on the ensuing foul shot (still shot all fouls until 1972), so he started, played less than 2 minutes, and had nothing on the score line but 5 fouls. We had 8 guys dressed and Texas had about 15-20. Early in the second half, it became obvious the we were going to run out of players, and Texas was going to be down to walk-ons. When the last Texas player to enter the game came to the table to go in, he showed his number to check in, as usual. Little asked, "What's your name?" followed by, "How do you spell it?" He had no clue who the guy was, and Little was the basketball SID. Anyway, we played the last 3-4 minutes with three players against 5 walk-ons. And their walk-ons were so bad that we were pressing them and turning the ball over. We came from about 10 points down and actually had a possession with a chance to tie or take the lead but turned it over and ended up losing by about 3.

Yes, it brought back some memories yesterday. Did anybody notice a familiar Houston basketball face as the Alabama coach?
