RE: 2017 ODU Football Season Recap
This season was always going to come down to QB play and it pretty much sucked all year long. The injuries didn't help, but maybe completely healthy, we win another game or so. With good QB play, this team wins 8 games at least.

The positive is Williams clearly has potential and grew as the season goes along. Now, we have to figure out how to replace Lawry and add another playmaker or 2 at WR.

They did. It didnt work.

Not trying to be a smartass, but exactly what adjustment(s) did we make?

I honestly didn't see anything other than some apparent stunts that seemed to be designed to pressure the QB in passing situations.

To be honest, I don't think people understand what they see. They don't really study what the offense and defense does and when you only watch the game live, you really can't judge what the schemes are.

The defense tried a few different blitz combinations and also played some man press (got torched here). The goal was certainly to slow down the pass with 6 defensive backs, but the tempo MTSU played (common theme) affected the ability to disguise coverages.

I think the task of replacing Lawry is off to a good start with Cox and Sinclair. Harper and Duhart give us a good start at WR (I think Harper is an undergrad)

Isn't depth supposed to be the antidote to injury? Hope we have sufficient depth because injuries will always be with us.

I'm not sold on Cox. The gap between Lawry and Cox is huge. At times this year, Cox looked lost on blocking assignments. Ray and Cox made a good one-two punch together over the years when both were healthy. I just don't think Cox has what it takes to be the main back for us. Sinclair and Jackson have my interest, but there is something lacking with Jackson right now.

Sinclair looked very strong, albeit very few carries.

Hopefully Duhart comes back and is healthy. We will have a lot of experience at the position and I'm keeping an eye out for progress from Todd, Colbert, and incoming Mayo.

Yes, exactly.

However, it was the run (320 yards) that we needed to adjust to, indeed should have planned for as well as the pass, and I saw no indication of such an effort.

Additionally, other than the stunts and blitzes, I saw no effort to come off the soft zone; such that MTSU torched us underneath with the pass as well as the run.

Would love to see us snare a FBS ready WR, LB and CB transfer.

I agree. We were a completely different team with Cox vs Ray. I think Cox was a nice compliment to Ray, but I am not sold on him as the go to back.

Cox is more of a workhorse. He's a solid back. Lawry is a first team all CUSA type game changing back.

Cox will be adequate if we find some playmakers at WR. But, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sinclair get a lot of time.

The good thing about Cox, unlike Lawry, is he can move around and be split out wide.
