I like Carey...he is a solid coach that teaches good values to his players apparently. NIU should keep him down the road imo.

But for God's sake..quit giving us fans these crappy QBs that just run ahead 3' - 6' and fall down one or twice every series and can't complete a forward pass!! What's the point of playing if you can't score points? Get somebody that can run your offense or change it.

I think you have some lofty expectations. The qb that you describe doesn't sign here out of high school. They go to the Big 10 etc. We get qbs that we can develop. For example our best passing qb in recent memory was Harnish. He wasn't recruited anywhere else except Air Force. Childers originally signed with Memphis. We need to develop a qb like him because we won't be getting a dual threat qb that can pass accurately out of high school. Santacaterina was a much better passer but turnovers did him in. Not sure why he wasn't given a chance to develop more but that's the coach's decision. If he made a mistake then fans should voice their unhappiness. Jury is still out for me.

There are only 130 D1 schools....that's it. Look at the NIU QB list...it is putrid. There are a ton of kids in the United States that can throw a spiral and an accurate 10 yard pass. C'mon dont you expect more from that crap NAIA crap offense Uremovich gave us this year? I watched it with the in-laws...it was embarassing.

I wish our offense was more creative.
The plays look the same from seven years ago.
Keep it up for another 30 and we will be like the NIU band.

There was only one really good QB in the Mac this year. Every team struggles to find a QB. While disappointed, I honestly don't expect more with a freshman QB. In 2008, when Harnish led the team as a freshman, NIU was 10th in the Mac in ypg. In 2017 with rs freshman Childers, NIU was 9th in ypg. When was the last time anyone can recall a freshman leading the MAC in passing, or a team to the macc, or leading their team to the top offense?? Almost never. Freshman are bad QBs. Lots of times so are sophomores...and juniors. The top P5 schools struggle to find good QBs. So does the NFL. Evaluating QBs is crazy hard. That's why a kid who went to North Dakota State is a far better pro than the 5 star recruit who went to Ohio state or Michigan.

You mean we're not supposed to keep running jet sweeps, bubble screens, and runs up the middle?

We had 50 seconds and two timeouts. Plenty of time to run Harbison who has been productive and clutch. The end was frustrating just like the SDSU game.

Not sure what you are frustrated about. I've been as critical as anyone of Coach U's offensive play calling...but the plays worked. Beebe scores on the long post route over the middle if it's thrown properly. He also scores on the last offensive play if Childers can lead him and throw it to the corner of the end zone.

RE: The Reciver Slipped
I was disappointed that in the 3rd quarter we didn't see Santa come into the game. Childers had the worst passing game I remember from him. We needed a spark and Childers was not getting it done. As far as Childers goes, he is a freshman and we will see how much he develops going into next year. I don't know any of the redshirted QB's, but hopefully, one of them may push Childers and Santa to be better.

Not sure what happened to our D the second half?? It seemed as if the team decided to coast in the second half like they thought 17-0 was good enough and they went conservative. That approach kills and we let them back in the game. Let us hope we have a decent opponent to play in the bowl game. (I am hoping it is the potato bowl so I can drive to it. LOL I am sure I am the only one on this board that wants that.

I think Carey made the absolute right call sticking with Childers for the whole game. First of all, the experience a young QB gains during those situation is invaluable. Secondly, Childers was not horrible in the 2nd half. He made some very good plays with his legs; there was one play in particular, after a double face mask call that was a huge call in our favor, when he got us a key first down, scrambling to keep the drive going. It set up the TD to tie the game. I also credit Carey for not overreacting to Childers picks; he was quick to deflect the blame from Childers. Carey is doing a great job of developing this kid. Ironically, the one weakness in his game is the one incredible strength from his backup. I really believe Childers will be a solid QB in this system. The season could not have gone any better for his development.
