won't get great offers off a 2 year resume highlighted by a 2 loss MAC title. what he might get could easily be a bad situation. the toledo program is very solid. a great class is coming in. and other than woodside's big loss, a lot of experience coming back. Miami, BG and 7 games in the glass bowl next year. are reasons to sit tight and enjoy your success. candle strikes me as more of a winner than a rebuilder type. i would not be at all surprised if he left for a great job at some point but I don't see him leaving for a questionable one.

RE: Does Coach go or stay?
“Great” offers are subjective and in the eyes of the seeker. For Campbell, with a worse resume than Candle, ISU was a great offer. The money that a low level SEC or Big Ten job offers is great by just about any standard and if you have character you’ll almost certainly get three or four years in the million dollar range. I hope he stays. I think he brings an exciting brand of football and I think we’ll compete strongly next year. But, there has to be a slew of headhunters out there with his name in bold on their list.

RE: Does Coach go or stay?
I tend to think he will stay because he still needs to build his resume a bit. Two years is not really enough to build an attractive portfolio but then with the crazy coaching carousel bubble we have today driven by insane amounts of TV dollars (primarily paid to the P5), who knows if he will get an attractive offer or not?

My feeling has always been (for football or any other endeavor) if the organization is riding high, the top priority should be maintaining continuity which usually suggests hiring from within. OTOH if the organization is a total dumpster fire then the approach should be finding someone from the outside to rebuild the organization from scratch. Simply put: "if it is broke, fix it" but "if it isn't broke, don't fix it".

When Pinkel left, I though Amstutz (rather than Christiansen) was the obvious choice and although that did not work out in the long run, it got two MACCs before the wheels came off and a win over Michigan after the wheels were off. When Stutz stepped down, major changes were required and an outside national search was the right call. When Beckman left, Campbell was the logical choice for continuity and when Campbell left, Candle was the logical choice. What concerns me at this time is that unlike those past examples, if Candle leaves I don't see a logic choice for his successor. Hopefully that person exists and O'Brien knows who he is.

I agree. Another great year or two could see a big budget program open up. That would make Coach Candle only about 39 years old.

Hopefully he stays forever. Recent history shows MAC coaches who leave for PIG10 jobs are largely unsuccessful. He is not going to get a shot at the SEC or PAC12. I think this year his good choices are limited.

I’m a big candle fan. Hope he sticks around but I think he will have some opportunities. Seems to have the look and feel of a coach that’s going to make it big time.

Don't know what Candle's value is right now, but it wouldn't surprise me to see OC Brian Wright get poached for a P5 coordinator job, or maybe even a G5 HC. He's been nominated for the assistant coach of the year already, and having coached Woodside to such a record setting career, I gotta believe he will be on people's lists.

RE: Does Coach go or stay?
He seems more stressed and reactionary lately, on the sidelines. Stay or go, hope that settles down.

It's more an issue for me, how he goes. I really hope he does get great offers from terrific but down programs, places he can turn around. I really hope more that he and his staff stay. ANYONE can live off his salary, quite well. To say the family isn't "taken care of" at that kind of salary just isn't reality. But same can't be said for those on staff. If they're to move up, possibly he has to move up? Don't know.

But they've brought us quality kids and that matters more than the great winning seasons. No "stories" of misbehavior by coaches or students. MANY stories of positive impact during and after their time here and no doubt many not known. Can't say enough about the athletic staff in that regard. I think the relationship with the local media is better. Whether that's local media realizing they were un-buttering their bread or something from staff, but worth noting.

Hope them all the best and hope they remember their time here fondly.

I haven't heard anything yet. I'm sure his family loves it here. I'm also sure that if he gets an offer, he will be gone. Regardless, he did something Beckman and Campbell couldn't, a MAC Championship Game!

While we're focusing on P5 schools, don't forget that USF or UCF could lose their coaches this season. Both have the ability to significantly upgrade his compensation. A few good years at either school will put him in position for a big time P5 job. Candle and his staff have shown they can recruit Florida, so he may be an attractive option.

I don't see either schools dipping into the MAC for a HC.

Candle has been here since 2009. That's quite a while. I don't doubt the staff will go if they get an offer. Hopefully he hired his replacement. I could envision Coach Wright getting the job and Bruce coming on as an assistant in some capacity.

RE: Does Coach go or stay?
Hard to say. He's at the point where his name will get thrown in the hat for some openings but I doubt that he's #1 on anyone's list right now. My guess is that he's here next year. One more solid season and the right school might make the right offer, but two years really isn't enough time, especially where he inherited a program that was in great shape when he took over. I think he needs 3-4 years of sustained success here first.

If/when he does move on, I hope we look at the staff and promote from within. It has worked out well for us, so far. And the continuity is great for the players.

One thing that works against him (unfairly, I think) is that he's not the smoothest guy I've ever heard in front of a mic. That is not where he is most comfortable. In contrast, Campbell was/is impressive as a public speaker. The big money HCs are expected to be PR figures for their schools.

Candle is a great talker... He is just stern. A very down to business guy. Why smile when there is nothing to smile about? He is goal oriented and you see that with our teams production level.
