Disappointed and depressing. Didn't we start like this last year?

It's hard to get all wrapped up in games and results like these when you know you just need to get hot for a week in March. That's just how it is.

I do, however miss the days when we would eat these kind of teams for breakfast.

Jim,

The problem with that is if Kent State isnt careful they will soon be playing in front of 428 fans in February at the MAC Center. Sure, there is plenty of time in this young season to get the thing rolling and the people on this board are fans regardless. But when losses to SELa and Loyola start piling up who really wants to go see the Western Michigan game on Valentine’s Day ( for instance)

As someone who has a long drive to attend home games - I agree. It's too easy to get into a mind set that the only games that are of importance are Akron, maybe OU and the MAC tourney. This weekends results across the MAC - us, UT-Cornell(?) and Akron-Dayton firm up the argument for making the MAC a one bid league. Before the weekend I was looking forward to and considering going to the Xavier game -now I fear it will be ugly. I knew we would miss Hall and yes we did start slow last year but we did beat Texas on the road

I agree. I hate to see college basketball going the way of the NBA. An 82 game pre season and then the playoffs. You are right on attendance. The NBA can get away with it due to all its star power. Who is going to go to a MAC game just to see an individual player? Besides what happened last year isn’t going to happen often. Let’s face it some luck is involved when you make a ten game run at the end of the season.

Yes but getting hot for a week in March doesn’t happen nearly as often as fans comment on it. We were a bit lucky last year to pull it off.

has to become a consistent double-figure scorer and judging from the game-by-game box scores its tough to figure out who that is going to be ... if anybody ... to join ADR and JW ...
From what I've seen, ADR looks like a 20- minute per game guy. To me, Frederick looks like he'll be the #2 scorer

There is no excuse for SELA loss ... but Valpo/Loyola are pretty solid Missouri Valley teams ... Kent could have won the Valpo game ... Loyola. don't know.

Give the comp a little respect. ... Can't wait to see the team in person, but might not be until Christmas time ...

Burden, they didn't just get hot a week in March last season. They won 9 of the last 13 going into the MAC tournament. I would say it is VERY rare to be hot that one week if a team is cold or only so-so going into the tournament. This team has plenty of time to round into a good team. The sooner they do the better, of course. Last year it wasn't until late January. That was cutting it close.

I don’t disagree. In my previous post I called it a 10 game streak. Even those are pretty rare though.

No doubt. Valpo in particular has more sustained success than most MAC teams, including Kent State in recent history and Loyola is always is in the thick of the gauntlet that is the Horizon League. And surely both are the flagship programs of their respective athletic departments.

Loyola has been in the MVC for the last 4 seasons. Their flagship program is probably men’s volleyball which won back to back national championships a couple years ago and draws a very loyal following. I just happened to be on the Loyola campus this weekend: beautiful campus right on Lake Michigan.

Dear god axeme I need to get out more. The once great Horizon league is now a shell of itself and I didn’t even realize it.

RE: Kent Sate vs. Valpo & Loyola
fallsdog, teams change leagues all the time. I remember when Akron was in and out of one conference before they even played a game in it. There was time when I could name, from memory, each team in every conference. Now, I bet I couldn't even name 40%. I don't even try to keep current on any conference but the MAC. Axeme, you are probably right about volleyball. Their NCAA basketball championship was so long, long ago.

They hired a new coach, Porter Moser, when they started to transition from the Horizon to the MVC, and he has been building a pretty good program. With Creighton and now Wichita St. gone, they could challenge for the MVC title this year. They’re getting their first AP votes in 30 years. And thanks to us, are now 7-0!
