I don't think it's any secret we prefer USF to win. Who doesn't want another home game? I would love another shot at an undefeated UCF. I won't be able to make the ECU game Saturday so I'd be ecstatic to have another home game this season.

Which is why UCF should forego their right to home field advantage if they win against USF and play the CCG in Memphis. You know, b/c real men don’t shy away from competition.

You overlook the fact that real men “earn” home field advantage. If Memphis had been able to beat UCF when they played, guess what? That’s right, Memphis would have “earned” home field.

Both would be 9-1, and would not have played, but USF would have defeated UCF, while Memphis would have got blown out by UCF.

Memphis' best win would be against a 25th ranked UCLA, while USF's best win would be against a top 15 UCF.

At that point, USF would overwhelmingly deserve home field advantage, but wouldn't get it due to a quirk which took the CFP poll BEFORE this weekends game even take place into account. This is extremely unfair.

But Memphis beat Houston on the road and Usf lost to Houston at home.

Well, true, if the USF-Houston game is counted as a "loss", when Houston threw up a prayer on 4th and 24 when the game was essentially over. However, even taking that out of the equation, USF's best win would be against a #12/13/15, depending on which poll, UCF, while Memphis' best win would be against a barely ranked UCLA, who went on to have a bad year (5-6). That is unfair, any way you slice it. The determination on who gets home field should be determined AFTER the biggest game of the year. That is fair.

So, you're saying the loss to Houston really doesn't count, b/c they got you with a 4th and long desperation play? Do you know how often that happens? UC got us with a 4th and 27 one year. Only thing that counts is the final score. That's "fair," lol.

Then you're saying it isn't "fair" that the AAC takes the ranking before the last game. It's the same rule for everybody in the conference. The reason is they don't want to wait 3 or 4 more days to determine the logistics for the CCG. Venue prep, tickets, hotels, air fares, equipment trucks, etc.

And then you're assuming if you beat UCF, you might jump Memphis in the next poll, when we are #20 and you are unranked? Highly unlikely. But the rules are the rules.

If your'e good enough to beat UCF on the road, then you should be good enough to beat us on the road, as well.

Man up. 03-lmfao

Totally agree with you. The rules are the rules.

Great point, BFinTX! 04-cheers
USF crowds are an embarrassment to the league. USF should never host.

Please note the article was penned by a writer with intent to create readership. It worked, but it is just an opinion with no basis in fact. Reporters actually do not know at this time which team the coaches would rather face and I surmise they are preparing for both teams until the game ends tonight.

Because Geoff Calkins wrote an article on it?

Doesn't matter much. We're still playing the CCG, win or lose to ECU.

But you really think that is a big issue with the Memphis team? We need to beat ECU to ensure we get the Peach Bowl if we win the CCG. ECU would be a bad loss we don't need. They're not looking past anybody.

But it's fine for sportswriters and fans to look ahead. What do you think USF and UCF fans have been doing for 2 weeks now? 03-lmfao

Losing to ECU wouldn't be a bad loss. We'd have a win over a ranked team on our resume'.

Calkins mentions both coaches and players. He quotes several players saying they would prefer playing the game at Memphis. One even said he was pulling for USF. That sounds like more than the author's opinion to me.

He also notes that he asked Norvell, who gave the generic coach speak reply that he's preparing for our game tomorrow. I'm sure he will worry about preparing for the CCG opponent after the ECU game.

But Calkins also gives a reasonable supposition why the coaches, as well as players, would prefer the home game. We're undefeated there. Plus, it's just common sense.

EXCERPTS:

The Tigers would prefer to play the championship game in the Liberty Bowl. Of course they would.

“Oh, absolutely,” said Memphis receiver Phil Mayhue. “ That would be the best scenario. You always want to be in front of the fans.”

Said Spencer Smith, the Memphis punter: “Oh, of course. we don’t really want to do all that traveling down to Orlando again, messing with all that jazz.”

Much better to play for the title in Memphis, at a stadium where the Tigers haven’t lost a game all year. Wouldn’t it be fun to have some championship tailgates at Tiger Lane? Can you imagine the celebration if the Tigers were to win their way into a New Year’s Day bowl in front of their previously long-suffering fans?

So here’s to Rocky D. Bull, the current South Florida mascot. Here’s to the Herd of Thunder, which is what South Florida calls its marching band. Here’s to the cheerleaders, who do pushups after every South Florida score. May they be utterly exhausted late Friday afternoon.

This has little to do with Central Florida. This has to do with what could be a magical Saturday at the Liberty Bowl on December 2.

“Yeah, I’ll watch it,” said Tiger linebacker/defensive end Genard Avery, the only Memphis player who dared to say such a thing. “I hope South Florida wins.”

I invite the reader to review the article. They will find that the head coach gave no public indication of which team he wants to play. I would quote it but not sure if I am allowed. The article quotes a few players about their preference, but that is not the point made in my post.

The author is needlessly provoking UCF for his own benefit and I do not see it helping our team. I imagine it will be bulletin board material should UCF prevail today.

Actually misread the final line in the pasted article as 'I'm not making that up' --- my bad. After reading the whole article Norvell sounds locked and ready for ecu -

The head coach is NEVER going to admit that publicly. But the players did, and any coach with common sense would prefer a home game to a road game, if given a preference for location.

That's not exactly a surprise, or anything that would give UCF extra incentive, IMO. You don't think UCF or USF coaches wouldn't feel exactly the same way, if the roles were reversed?

I also completely disagree that Calkins is doing that to give UCF bulletin board material. If you listen to all his podcasts, he very clearly pulls for Memphis.
