Hank Hughes Transferring (not W&M)
Called it in 2016. He really missed a chance here where he would've had a real shot. I have no idea why he thought bailing on us in the 11th hour to stand around Texas A&M on his own/parent's dime was a good idea.

Now, he'll go to Ball State where he'll probably stand around another three years, just a thousand miles from Texas. At least Ball State will cover the bill and I believe they have a huge need at QB. I hope it works out for him.

Well that's certainly frustrating. I couldn't help thinking about Hughes all year with our QB struggles and playing at A&M always did seem like a long shot.

I think he will have to sit out a year since Ball State is in FBS. Hughes had a near zero chance of playing at A&M (unless there were multiple injuries, transfers, suspensions etc.), but I guess a possibility of playing against SEC competition was really enticing.

Tangentially, a certain Bball center who transferred out has not played a minute after sitting out a year for eligibility. Injury?

Plays at JMU today.

If we're talking about the same person, I don't think he's eligible until the spring.

Seacat should be eligible now, I believe. Not 100% sure though. The timing of his transfer may indeed push it until spring.

You appear to be correct. The App St. website says he's eligible at the beginning of this season

He has to wait until after exams in the first semester are over. He transferred during this semester last year when he was suspended and he was on our team at the beginning of the first semester last year.

He didn't get on the floor in App States 135-34 win over Toccoa Falls (which look like they aren't even in the NCAA or NAIA, but in the NCCAA Division II...I had a good ten minute detour reading about that whole group). If you don't get on the floor then, definitely sounds like he has to wait until after exams.

Geez, 135-34. Sounds like a team that will be on W&Ms schedule next year

Hunter Seacat is eligible on Dec 18, which is the day after Appalachian State's fall semester concludes. Per NCAA rules, he had to sit out two semesters, so in his case, that was Spring 2017 & Fall 2017.

Wilton Speight, Michigan QB and VA native, is transferring for his final season.

He'll be a grad transfer at his pick of FBS schools, assuming he is medically cleared to play, and would not even be surprised to see him land at UVA. His younger brother is a freshman OL at Michigan, so, a little surprised at the move.

Too many other QB's in the system, including the R-freshman that finished up on Saturday.

RE: Hank Hughes Transferring (not W&M)
UVa seems like a natural landing spot for Speight given he's from Virginia and they are graduating their starting QB. BUT...wouldn't it be fun to dream if he thought about WM?! I realize I'm grasping at straws, but here are things to consider:
-We run a pro-style offense that helps prep for the NFL
-We have all of the pieces to be very successful next year if a QB of that caliber drops in
-Flacco, Wentz, FCS QBs get looks and consideration from NFL if the talent is there

I know, I know, not gonna happen; but there's definitely a pitch that could be made for WM!

Not to get into this conversation/argument but both Battle and Mitchell were considerably higher rated coming out of high school so I think we are ok with the 'caliber' of QB we currently have. I firmly believe one of them will establish themselves this spring as our starter and we will be more than satisfied with our 'caliber' of qb.

***I was writing about Hughes and not Speight when I wrote this. Speight was a bigger recruit than either Battle or Mitchell, but not by a lot. He would start for us next year if he transferred here. Not sure it would be the best thing for the program however. I'm all for a one year lineman, receiver, even a running back. Positions where we need depth and rotations. I don't believe in a one year QB savior. I know there are examples of good ones (Russell Wilson).

I agree with this. Although believe and hope may get interchanged. :)

It would ruin any chance of development for our young guys if a 1 year transfer took the starting job. JL isn't going to welcome a 5th year player...no way.

That is probably the best place to end this thread. We have about 20 other threads that already cover the next logical statements. And I'll read them all because I don't like it when any thread shows 'unread messages', and nothing new will be said, and I'll regret not having that time back in my life.
