If college football had relegation ...
Quote:If college football had relegation ...

Big 12 (32):
Out — Kansas (Sagarin Rating of 156). This is not a difficult call. Come back when you can beat a MAC team, Jayhawks.

In — Memphis (Sagarin Rating of 36). The Tigers tried mightily to earn Big 12 expansion inclusion last year, with local corporate giant FedEx even offering to sponsor the league title game. They’ve gone 35-13 the past four seasons and have a hot-shot coach of their own in Mike Norvell.

RE: If college football had relegation ...
I like this idea. So say we take scheduling and money out for the sake of the argument.

So the American relegates teams that are under .500 (as of today).. That would mean we send down Tulane, Tulsa, UCONN, Cincinnati, and East Carolina.

As the leading conference of the G5 contingent, we would begin the poaching process from other G5 conferences.

Replace with North Texas and Florida Atlantic from C-USA, Ohio and Toledo from MAC, and one pick of Troy/ App State/ Georgia State/ Ark State from Sun Belt.

By doing so, you create a clear leader of the G5 schools to be poached for conference realignment due to sustaining their spot in the top G5 conference in college football. Keep in mind, these changes would happen every year so it would promote the need for staying on your game at all time (as if the need isnt already there) and not only that it would create great football every week witht he teams listed.

Yes? No?

RE: If college football had relegation ...
It would be a neat idea, not feasible, but hell, let's play 03-wink

A. P5 conferences relegate playoff losers

1 seed SEC: E7 UTk @ E7 Arkansas: E7 UTk relegated
2 seed ACC: C7 UNC @ A7 Cuse: C7 UNC relegated
3 seed B12: #10 Kansas @ #9 Baylor: #10 Kansas relegated
4 seed B10: W7 UIUC @ E7 Indiana: W7 UIUC (I cry a little as an alum 03-wink ) relegated
5 seed P12: N6 Oregon St @ S6 Colorado: N6 Oregon St relegated

Relegated lists: Tennessee, UNC, Kansas, Illinois, Oregon St

B. G5 champs earn promotion in conference title games:

1 seed AAC: UCF over Memphis: UCF promoted (sad)
2 seed MWC: Boise St over Fresno: Boise St Promoted
3 seed MAC: NIU over Akron: NIU promoted
4 seed CUSA: North Texas over FAU: North Texas promoted
5 seed SunBelt: Troy over Georgia St: Troy promoted

Promoted: UCF, Boise, NIU, North Texas, Troy

C. Conferences pick teams based by ranking, with a geographic limit allowed for the ACC / Pac12 to prevent a two time zone jump for fairness.

1. SEC takes UCF
5. Pac12 takes Boise on geographic exception
2. ACC takes Troy (bitterly)
3. B12 takes North Texas
4. B10 takes NIU (actually ok).

D. Independents are forced to join conferences:

1. ND to B10
2. BYU to MWC
3. Army to AAC
4. UMass to MAC

E. Football and Basketball FULLY separated as conferences so the conferences would be separate memberships.

Non-Sports become regional conferences, so you start to see the shakeout of regional conferences for BB/olympic sports.

>>>>

The logical end is 4 power conferences based on the Midwest, South, East, West with 8 smaller G5 type conferences with a promotion playoff.

It never happens, but it was interesting to type.

Why do you fools keep tying Notre Dame to the Big Ten? There is NOTHING there but geography.

Notre Dame is ACC for a reason.

Delaney has had a hard on for the Irish for years. If they didn't have the NBC deal, it might've happened by now.

NBC deal, and Big Ten not allowing non-Big 10 network deals is part of it.
ACC allowing for non-football membership instead of full (with a scheduling agreement for a minimum number of games) is the other, as the Big 10 wouldn't allow it.

That's my understanding anyway. I would think if the Big Ten offered ND the same deal the ACC is, they'd immediately move, but that's just my guess.

Of the fourteen Big Ten members, there is one that remotely looks like Notre Dame, and even then they have very divergent academic emphases.

Notre Dame's non-football sports have always been in a league that more resembles them at the expense of the Big Ten's proximity.

They'll probably never have to join a football league, but when they do, it'll be the ACC.

I went to a Big Ten grad school. I've been to Notre Dame.

I found a lot of cultural similarities.
Your mileage may vary.
