RE: Official Game Thread: #7 Kentucky
This is one of the youngest and rawest Calipari teams: unless they're way ahead they play 8 guys, 6 freshmen and 2 sophomores
Guards:
6-5 198 R-Fr Hamidou Diallo, 28.3 min., 16.0 ppg on .450 and .333 from 3 (3-9); 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists
6-6 180 Fr. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, 28.7 min., 7.7 ppg on .500 and .333 from 3 (1-3), 3.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 4.0 t.o.’s, 3.0 steals
6-0 180 Fr. Quade Green, 22.7 min., 8.3 ppg on .364 and .200 from 3 (1-5), 1.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists
Forwards:
6-9 215 Fr. Kevin Knox, 36.3 min., 14.3 ppg on .389 and .357 from 3 (5-14), 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals
6-7 236 Fr. P.J. Washington, 26.0 min., 8.0 ppg on .444 and 0 3’s, .533 FT’s, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 3.3 t.o.’s, 1.7 blocks
6-10 221 So. Sacha Killeya-Jones, 18.7 min., 6.0 ppg on .636 and 0 3’s, .444 FT’s, 5.0 rebounds, 1.3 blocks
6-11 240 Fr. Nick Richards, 16.7 min., 4.7 ppg on .462 and 0 3’s, 5.7 rebounds, 1.7 t.o.’s, 1.3 blocks
6-9 205 So. Wenyen Gabriel, 20.3 min., 4.0 ppg on .278 and .167 from 3 (1-6).
They’ve got length and marvelous athleticism though with at least 3 McDonald's All-Americans. Everybody rates them in the top 10. They got nipped by the 2-0 Kansas Jayhawks 65-61.
They snuck by Vermont, ranked 69th by SI and 1st in the American East, 73-69.
They beat Utah Valley State, ranked 109th (to ETSU's 110) and 2nd in the WAC by SI., 73-63.
They beat Morehead State in a down year, ranked 278th and 8th in the OVC by SI, 92-67.
Not the most overwhelming start for the young bunch. They’re pretty raw – but so are the Bucs right now. Utah Valley State and Vermont were competitive.
Only 2 guys have made more than 1 three in 3 games of trying (Diallo with 3 and Knox with 5). 11 total makes in 3 games shooting .297 from the arc. Opponents shoot .307 with 23 makes. Rebounding margin is +2.7. T.O.’s + 1.3. Average 7.3 blocks and hold opponents to .401 from the field. Not high scoring, ringing up 69 points to opponents 65.7.
Don’t know how the Bucs can hang with them if we don’t play our bigs, though. We’ll need to take a big step forward to be competitive. But again, Utah Valley State and Vermont were.
