RE: Arkansas AD Jeff Long fired
Long is still on the CFP committee as the SEC's athletic director representative. Awkward...
And yeah, Bert should also be making plans to start living the buyout life.

RE: Arkansas AD Jeff Long fired
Being an AD has got to be the most thankless job in all of higher education, and, I say that knowing how much of a pressure cooker recruiting, admissions, and development people have it. It used to be a big job running athletics...now, you're just stuck in the middle between the presidents who get to enjoy all of the executive action the programming goes, and keeping coaches in check, who all make more than their bosses. All the while, stuck taking heat from donors who, in some places obviously, have no problem whatsoever going above and beyond to a president or board member to throw someone under the bus or make some threat about pulling donations.
I bet Jeff got the ax because someone thought Bielema should have been gone already. Of course, strategically, you stand a great chance losing two coaches in succession when doing this, losing the HC, and then dumping the interim because someone not in athletics interfering with the direction of finding another big name. Nevermind the monetary commitments you make and how much of a mistake it is when you put up these agreements some never seem to want to fully honor.
CFB is really becoming a joke.

RE: Arkansas AD Jeff Long fired
Hiring Bielema would have been bad enough for Long, given Bielema's lack of success at Arkansas.
But remember that Long also hired this guy, and Long owns his fiasco, too.

RE: Arkansas AD Jeff Long fired
"Arkansas said it will honor the provisions of Long's contract, which runs through June 30, 2022."
So, they will be paying off Long through 2022 and Bielema, if fired, through 2020 - and Bielema's buyout is $15 million.
Taking into account all of the new money that will be spent on an AD and football staff, that is one expensive shakeup. With Florida, if you add up the buyout to Muschamp, firing buyout to McElwain, the hiring buyout of McElwain to Colorado State and the buy-game to Colorado State, that was over $40 million - and that's without any new money being spent on the new staff.
We are in one expensive period of college athletics. NFL Coaches, on average, don't even reach that.

Thankless job that pays very very VERY well.
How is making two bad hires and getting fired making CFB a joke?

Well not if he gets another job before then.

guess Bielema has 2 games left as well...
So he didn't do any better at AD than he did as head of the CF Playoff committee.
There are some guys who continue to fail up. Political connections are usually involved, but which ones and why probably won't be known. I bet he does fine. Watch out he might replace Emmert someday.

think it's SO funny about Big 12 folks slamming Jeff Long due to the CFP committee.
Sorry but Baylor and TCU had absoutely NO business in the playoff in 2014. NONE. Nada. ZILCH.
Baylor scheduled like a *****. NOPE
TCU lost to Baylor, thus they weren't B12 champs. NOPE.
Sorry, too bad, so sad.

I like college sports(and really all sports) period.
Sorry, but the Big 12 had absolutely no business in the playoff in 2014. Your champion (no matter what your clown commish said) was Baylor. And they had no business being in the playoff with their putrid schedule. absolutely none.

I think the Big 12 got screwed, but not by the committee. It got screwed by the lack of upsets the last 2 weeks. If there are a couple of well placed upsets the league could have gotten not one, but two in. I remember doing the math- the chance it all went chalk like it did was like 5%.

Bielemas buyout isn't 15 million. At most its 11.2 million after the last game of the season.

Well, if it's only $11.2 million, then I guess Long didn't make a mistake by giving Bert that big contract after all!

One of Longs biggest mistake was telling a well connected fan. If they didn't like the direction of the program they could be a fan of Arkansas State.

to me that's not getting screwed, that's just bad luck. Huge difference.
