Neither will be whatever it is that replaces him. It's Africa. No matter who replaces him they'll be crooked as hell.

RE: Possible Coup in Zimbabwe
Africa isn't hopeless. There are places that are reasonably well governed and that have had competent leadership. The current government in Mozambique is okay, Namibia, Botswana, Cape Verde, and Somaliland come to mind.
But even Morgan Tsvangerai, who is really problematic, will be far better than Mugabe.

I agree. Botswana is pretty good and low on the corruption scale (top 20% in the world). They have a nice little free-market economy and transparent government. If they could make a deal with Namibia for a pathway to the sea, they'd go to the next level.

RE: Possible Coup in Zimbabwe
If any of you guys want to read a book that goes into much of the economic mismanagement and bright spots in Africa since independence, I'd recommend the book "Africa" by Martin Meredith. Its actually pretty conservative in outlook, but is still a very good overview of what happened.

Again, I don't think you could call his economy 'Marxist'. Really more of an 'corporatist/corrupt' mix with currency controls.
The guy was a Marxist who used whatever tools he could to advance it, he relabeled as socialist in the early 90's when it became popular.
Oh, like Bernie is doing?

RE: Possible Coup in Zimbabwe
It wasn't that long ago that Zimbabwe was considered the breadbasket of Africa. After all the farm confiscations and farmland just sitting there, it's left the people there on the verge of starvation. I was there in 2007 for a couple of weeks. Beautiful people who have been absolutely decimated by Mugabe and his cronies.

By the last time I was there in March 2016, there were people starving. There was no 'almost'. One of things that has always amazed me about Zim is that everything is so damn expensive. Luxury goods that have to be shipped long distances I get, but just basic staples were as much, if not more than they were in the USA and far more expensive than in South Africa. Even locally grown goods.

Right..
But that really isn't Marxism or Socialism...its just theft, ethnic cleansing, and murder. There's no economic ideology in play here.
why do those that use theft, ethnic cleansing, and murder always seem to do it under the name of communism, socialism, Marxism, etc? Seems like the "True Believers" should speak out as these "really isnts" are giving their ideology a bad name.
Germany? Slavery? The Edict of Nantes? The Pogroms in Czarist Russia? Oh, I could go on forever.
Nazi Germany was a nationalistic socialism. Slavery and anti Semitism are evil institutions that has been used in all societies throughout history, so I don't understand your point with those examples.

RE: Possible Coup in Zimbabwe
Obiang is now the senior pan-African leader and he supports Mugabe's wife. The smart money is on her.
The economic subsidies are tied to that relationship so fully expect Zimbabwe to follow the line.

RE: Possible Coup in Zimbabwe
The question is really going to be this...will South Africa's government get sick and tired of the chaos on their border and just let Tsvangerai/the MDC take over. Or will it just be another ZANU-PF faction?
Either way, Zim is back in a free fall.
I seriously question if Obiang will really provide significant support to anyone if there's not a real payoff for him. Sure, Mugabe did help foil the Mark Thatcher coup attempt, but, nah.

I'm sure it is much worse than it was 10 years ago. Even in 2007, unemployment was sky high. In Harare, men were congregating everywhere because there were no jobs to go to. Coming from the US, it was an eerie sight. The people we visited said that in 2000, the Zim was on par to the USD. Inflation was so out of control in 2007, they were printing money every few months and the bills had an expiration date on them. I remember exchanging a few hundred dollars and getting a couple of million Zims.
