Florida lawyer says Gators honing in on Chip Kelly
A somewhat unusual source is saying that Florida is targeting Chip Kelly and that he may be hired sooner than later.

Darren Heitner is the source.

Kelly to Gainesville?

Florida is craving offense and Kelly is craving a nice job. Seems to fit.

Kelly could be dangerous in Florida. That offense with a good defensive coordinator in that recruiting ground?

The East would get good really quick.

Tennessee with Gruden Or Petrino should be fun too

Tennessee doesn't need Gruden. Gruden has never recruited at the college level. Let that sink in. As for Petrino, I seriously doubt that the SEC wants to take on that issue or responsibility, and therefore I don't see him at Tennessee.

I think Dan Mullen at Tennessee is a very real possibility.

RE: Florida lawyer says Gators honing in on Chip Kelly
The knock on Chip Kelly is that he doesn't like to recruit. Or at least that is presented as a reason why he might not take another college job.

Two things...

1. His NFL career is done. Another team is not calling.

2. I'm speculating, but I think Kelly's disdain for recruiting might have had something to do with his career at Oregon. When you don't have a natural recruiting base in your backyard then it's a drudgery no matter how much money you've got at your back. Perhaps that sort of drudgery invites laziness and you end up getting tangled up with a recruiting service because there's so much work to do and so little time to do it. Not an excuse, just an incentive.

Point being, he wouldn't have these problems at a place like Florida. The recruits are all over his backyard and they will be more than happy to come to him. He may or may not enjoy the process, but it will be much easier at Florida than Oregon to bring in top players.

If Kelly is going to get back into college then Florida is one of the few places that is a perfect fit.

If Kelly heads to Florida then Mullen to Tennessee starts to make some sense. But the truth is Fuentes is the best suited to Tennessee. He already has established recruiting contacts in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida.

The really interesting rumor that Finebaum has been sort of pushing is Fisher to A&M.

If I was going to match them up I think I would have Fuentes to Tennessee, Mullen to A&M, and Kelly to Florida and Fisher to Virginia Tech. But that's just me.

If I'm Tennessee then I am intrigued by Fuente, but I don't know that I'm sold. He did a good job at Memphis, but wasn't there very long and has only been at Virginia Tech two seasons. I don't know how deep his connections are in that part of the country. He's from Oklahoma and was an assistant at TCU longer than the HC at Memphis. Perhaps he would be a better choice for Arkansas?

The thing about Dan Mullen is he's performed pretty well at a hard job and always coaches up a pretty good QB. MSU is not an easy place to recruit to. There are players in state, but the power programs are pretty much going to take who they want. Then you have to fight Ole Miss. And Starkville is not an attractive locale at that.

As a TN fan, the one concern I have about Mullen is his conference record not being that great. Granted that playing Alabama every year hurts that record, but he won't lose Alabama on a TN schedule either. I'd be content with Mullen, excited to see what he does. But I want to check in with:

Fuentes
Gundy
Patterson
And maybe Doeren
Maybe Strong?

I want to wait on Norvell.

That would take a lot of money, I'm sure. But that would mean potential coaching changes at:
TN
Florida
Arkansas
Auburn
Texas A&M
Ole Miss
Miss St (if one of the other schools hires Mullen)

I'm guessing that never before have 7 SEC schools gotten a new coach in the same year.

RE: Florida lawyer says Gators honing in on Chip Kelly
Miss State is expected to be even better next season with those returning. Mullen may not want to leave a good situation and face a re-building or re-structuring job elsewhere immediately. But greater money at a school with a bigger name and better recruiting options, may be enough to lure him away. It's a choice of taking on a new challenge with bigger incentives, or hang onto a comfortable and optimistic situation for the next season. He may decide to wait another year. When he lets his name float, MSU comes up with more money and contract accommodations.

Here's the current list of number one candidates per prospective school you listed.
Tenn--Gruden
Florida--Chip Kelly
Arkansas--Gus Malzahan
Auburn--????
Texas A&M--Jimbo Fischer
Ole Miss--????
MSU---Dan Mullen

RE: Florida lawyer says Gators honing in on Chip Kelly
I'll be honest, and say I don't know about Malzahn. He could stay in an iffy situation @ Auburn or he could bolt for more job security and closer to home in Arkansas. He could go either way and I would not be surprised for any direction he takes. If the Gus bus does leave for Arkansas, I believe Auburn would reach out to Mike Leach at Washington State, simply because his offense is similar to Gus Malzahn's. Auburn can be a stressful place to coach, especially with the big, giant elephant (Bama) in the room, but something that is actually in Auburn's favor, when it comes to recruiting is that although the state Auburn is located in is not known for producing a lot of talent, Auburn is extremely close to at least one state that is well-known for producing a lot of high school football talent, so Auburn is not nearly disadvantaged as Oregon or Mississippi State are. Auburn really needs to sell the fact that they are practically on the Alabama-Georgia state line, IMO, and 'Bama's claim that Auburn is the university of/for western Georgia is actually a huge selling point in Auburn's favor.

There's only one thing that leads to job security, winning consistently. While I don't care what happens with Malzahn, Arkansas is not a place where anyone has won consistently since the days of Lou Holtz. Houston Nutt had some success but Arkansas is not a great get as a job in its current condition.

As to Auburn, it has never had an issue recruiting Georgia, Tennessee, or Florida until it was dragged to the West because of Alabama. Our natural rivals are in the East and only people under 30 don't realize that our schedule consisted of Tennessee, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Florida for decades prior to 1992. There is nobody in the West that we played regularly except for Alabama and we played all of the others named more often than we played Alabama. Mississippi State is the only school in the West besides Alabama that Auburn had a history with. We seldom played Ole Miss or L.S.U. prior to '92. The only school in the East we didn't have a history with was Kentucky.

So when Arkansas and South Carolina were added Auburn should have refused to move, but we were promised that it would be of short duration and when we added more we would be moved back. We weren't.

BTW: I didn't close this thread. I think my cat did. She was walking across the keyboard when I got off the phone. I just noticed it and reopened the thread, sorry.

Remember that Fisher & Malzahn have the same agent, Jimmy Sexton. Sexton is a master of playing off schools against each other to max the salary offer out. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew Malzahn was moving to Arkansas that he would dangle A&M to bid up Auburn or vice versa.

I think Auburn might well consider Dabo too. In the Auburn mind Dabo has beaten Saban, recruits very well, and runs a version of Mazahn's offense. They also know that Bama would go after him when Saban retires. Bear wanted Bama to go after Pat Dye and Auburn got him first. This is a very similar situation. I think the pocket books would open wide knowing that Dabo with two years under his belt at Auburn when Saban retires would likely tip the balance back to the Eastern half of the State.

I agree that Dabo would be a great get, but would he leave Clemson where he should have a lifetime contract at this point? Easier path to the CFP and all that. Money talks, but so does stability.
