OK...I'm going to go there. Jimmye is almost 70 years old. I'm starting to get a Joe Paterno vibe here (minus the Sandusky stuff). Guessing Laycock could go 2-9 for ten straight seasons and Huge would not touch him. My question is...when does HE decide that golfing at Kingsmill is more fun than recruiting high school kids. Jimmye is an all timer, a true legend, and NO ONE will ever do what he has done at W&M. In spite of that, is it time for new blood and a graceful exit?

NO! This team has 98 players, 74 of which are sophomores or younger. This is a team that needs to be led by an accomplished HC and a tenured staff. Use some patience and let this group of players ( and their 1st year OC) grow together. I agree the offense is really struggling, but this group will come together in the next year or so and be a handful in the CAA

No. But I think yesterday was the most frustrated I've been with his coaching decisions. Bottom line I think his presence is still a benefit rather than detriment to the program.

RE: Jimmye Laycock
Jimmye has a habit of resurrecting his reputation every 4-5 years just when some observers are ready to write him off. So I am willing to see if next year is the next iteration of that phenomenon.

However, having said that, if I were to hear an announcement tomorrow that Jimmye is retiring at the end of this year, I would be happy for him while also looking at it as a great opportunity to bring in new blood and fresh ideas.

Well crafted post, I would agree with that. JL is W&M, runs a clean program, and has had some success over the years. His players graduate, and the legacy in the NFL is a testament. I think a blending of existing tradition and fresh ideas could be good for the program as it moves forward.

RE: Jimmye Laycock
I'll dissent. It's time. Accusations of impatience are completely off base. Over the last seven season, he's 37-40 and, more tellingly, 21-31 in conference play (which doesn't even count the ass whipping UR gave us in the 2015 playoffs). This is now a mediocre CAA program.

I think he's earned the right not to be fired. But it's time. I'm sure he's still capable of a decent season every 4-5 years. I just don't think that should be an acceptable standard.

RE: Jimmye Laycock
JL isn't getting fired or pushed out so the whole thing is moot and I take no position, but right now W&M is averaging 15.6 points/game, their fewest since at least 1999. They'll have to average 24 points/game over their last 4 games to finish ahead of the 2011 team and only be the 2nd worst scoring offense. How confident are we that this offense can do that? JL's supposedly an offensive guru and he can't blame the OC because he turfed the last one and replaced him with someone completely green. This team has major problems that go far beyond who's at QB. The rest of the conference is going one direction, W&M is going the other. The recruiting threads tell me the players we're getting are amazing. Are those wrong? Are they not being developed?

Towson was on top of the world and they really suck this season. Albany was expected to be very good good again, an they're bad. Teams are up and down. We're obviously down but we'll bounce back.

Jimmye will walk away on his own terms and he deserves to do that. I am sure Jimmye has another 3~5 good years in him to march on.

He’s certainly not leaving with the last three recruiting classes he’s signed starting to fill the two-deep. Regardless of what anyone thinks about this season the younger classes are loaded. Certainly we want wins and improvement over the last 4 games but the near future is bright. If JL decides to retire (not happening) an incoming coach will find a full cupboard.

Tribe 3455, you hit the nail directly on its head. This year has been painful at times, no doubt about it. The future however is extremely bright! Last time I checked we had about 13 or 14 Srs out if 90+ student athletes. Out of those Srs, maybe four or five are significant contributors, mostly on the D-Line and O-Line. Our youth is extremely talented and driven. We have good young WRs, however in my humble opinion, we lack a true perimeter playmaker with the absence of Dedmon. We should make a concentrated effort to find that type of player in the upcoming recruiting class.

It's easy to point the finger at one or two things, but what I see is a lack of execution everywhere. The QB (doesn't matter which one) misses open Targets. Open Targets drop catchable balls. The Line not always holding their blocks. RBs not always making the right cut. QBs not selling their fakes! This is a big one, especially against faster, more athletic defenses. QBs, do yourself a favor and sell your fakes! These examples are simply on the execution side of things.

Play calling - playing a fast defense, run the ball between the tackles! Wear them out! Shorten up the game and keep it close by minimizing the opponents offensive possessions. Run it down their throats. I don't care if we run it 5 times in a row. Make them stop it, then Run some bunch formations with your WRs, rub and pick to get guys open. Keep doing it until the Refs start calling penalties. Run Play action roll outs to the TEs on the out pattern. Run Play action passes to the seam route! Loosen them up.

Most importantly, the 12th man sucked! That's us. We were weak, we lacked energy, and it was embarrassing that a small group of JMU fans were much louder than 10k strong. I had a fan in front of me that kept looking back at me because I was being too loud. Really?

JL has been the face of Tribe football and deserves our respect and appreciation. This year he has seemed less engaged on the sidelines plus we have become too predictable.

Next season will be a crossroads since the contract for JL expires 1/31/19. Here is hoping for a playoff run next season and the good times rolling!!
