RE: University of Toledo improving lives and the community
Good for the President to stand up to the Blade and their recent terrible editorial that basically smeared the reputation of every program, employee and student of UT. There are some great people working and going to school here, many great faculty and programs, and long history of serving students and the community, reflected in part by the many successful alumni. Yes there are challenges and issues that need to be addressed seriously, but those do not nor should not reflect on the entire institution. There may have been a point decades ago that referring to Bancroft High may have been appropriate (and yes I know some ignorant local people and groups who still use that characterization, lacking any understanding and knowledge of UT), but certainly does not reflect the recent and current nationally respected faculty and programs, millions in external funding research grant support, 6000 employees and $800 million annual operating budget. No we are not Yale, OSU, or even Miami (OH) U, but we have plenty to offer to students and communities and do produce great alumni - I personally know dozens of them including many who came from local HS over the last 20 years, while UT is also making significant contributions to higher education in the state and service to our community-much more the The Blade can or ever has.

Well said, PaulJ.

Yes, the recent articles about the PA program sort of tossed the baby out with the bath water. They insinuated that all programs at UT were inferior. Most business with high and low performing divisions have similar issues. UT will put their energies towards righting the ship with that particular program and the rest of the campus will still operate, changing lives, adding to research, improving our community and giving students the opportunities to better their situations.

I was disappointed in the president's response. It was a rehash of what you could read on the UT website. I would have preferred that she actually address the fact enrollment didn't increase this year, the complete fiasco with the PA program where apparently nobody will be held accountable except low level administrators and the law school.

At this point she took the approach to focus on the positive and directly address the broader attack on the reputation of UT as presented by The Blade editorial. President Gaber has made numerous public statements and comments on the specific issues you raise-and actions to address those are also still ongoing and will likely here more of. Personally I appreciated the strong statement in support of the quality work, employees, programs, students and alumni.
