San Diego St Senate votes to retire the Aztec mascot (and nickname?)
SDSU PC forces seem to have won a victory. The name change still has to be approved by SDSU's President.

By this same logic, guess burritos, tacos, fajitas and refried beans can not be eaten by persons of non-Mexican heritage, as that is appropriating another's cultural heritage.

The NCAA always found the Aztecs non-objectionable as a nickname, as they weren't a Native USA tribe just like the Irish.

It is a topic worth discussing. There is a large population of Aztec's in Mexico and Central America. Ask them what they think before you go scraping names off of buildings.

It shouldn't matter where the tribe is from. If you want to use their name, just ask.

There is no logic that connects eating burritos to appropriating cultural heritage.

Um, not really. Very few Aztecs survived the sack of Mexico City (Tenochtitlan) by Cortes and his Indian allies. (Practicing human sacrifice doesn't incline your tribal enemies to accept surrenders.) There are no more Aztecs today than there are Elamites or Philistines or Carthaginians.

It's the exact same principle, but it's off topic for the board.

USC is going to need to get rid of that Trojan name.

I think they should keep it. That's pretty much always my position on these things, though.

When you're the team using the mascot, you must find something valuable about the mascot itself. These things weren't chosen because they were wimpy. They weren't chosen to be made fun of.

As for the indian issue - I like the Seminole approach. Obviously, an extinct tribe can't do that but I think it's correct.

How could birth control be considered cultural appropriation? That's more in the nature of a technology.

Not really, they are as extinct as the Huns. Their culture disappeared and they just melted into the larger population we now call Mexican. Just like how the Huns are just Germans now.

You don't know what logic means do you?

Except that the Huns didn't get surrounded, beaten and massacred before the scattered survivors melted into the surrounding population. They broke up, parts were defeated, other parts defeated, absorbed some new tribes, broke up, etc. So a much larger percentage of Atilla's group left descendants than the Aztecs.

I hope the President doesn't approve it.
